"Party Monster" is based on the book St. James wrote about Alig, "Disco Bloodbath," and on the documentary that was also called "Party Monster" and was directed, like this film, by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato ("The Eyes of Tammy Faye").
Inevitably, in a movie devoted to scene-makers, Chloë Sevigny (who had better decide whether she wants to be an actress or a sideshow) shows up as a girl who drifts into Alig's orbit, and so does Natasha Lyonne, padded in a fat suit with pierced lips, Ingrid Sischy glasses and ropes of fl hair.
But then, "Party Monster" is the kind of movie in which it doesn't pay to be a talented actor.

But with their new feature Party Monster (based on Bailey and Barbato’s own documentary of the same name, as well as James St. James’ memoir Disco Bloodbath), they’ve topped themselves, taking a true story about sex, crack, celebrity, and murder, and using Macaulay Culkin as the perfect sugar to keep the nastiness down.
This is problematic: we identify a bit too strongly with Culkin’s Alig, so when he morphs into the film’s titular monster, the shock value of his appalling behavior is lessened; it’s impossible to see him as a brutal criminal.
It would have been nice to see more of the supporting players, and to flesh out their characters might have provided a better understanding of Alig’s downward spiral, but this film belongs to Culkin and Green, and the supporting cast can only be steamrolled or get out of the way.

Party Monster directors Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey previously had a Sundance hit with a documentary under the same title, about the rise to fame of ‘Club Kid’ Michael Alig and his eventual incarceration for the murder of his drug-dealer.
The film shows Michael’s ascent to prominence as a party promoter, eventually eclipsing James before spiralling deeper and deeper into drugs and, eventually, murdering his drug dealer, Angel (Wilson Cruz).
To sum up, Party Monster tells an intriguing story and is frequently very funny, but it also has its annoying moments and will severely test your tolerance for young Hollywood actors camping it up and shrieking a lot.
