Rep. Hall of Texas switches from Democrat to Republican - The Washington Times: Nation/Politics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Texas Rep. Ralph M. Hall switched parties last night, filing for re-election as a Republican after nearly a quarter-century as one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress.
Speculation that he might switch parties first surfaced in 1995, when the GOP gained control of the House for the first time in 40 years.
Texas Republican Party spokesman Ted Royer said Hall was the 174th elected Texas Democrat to join the Republican Party since 1992.

Party switching in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In United States politics, party switching is any change in party affiliation of a partisan public figure, usually one who is currently holding elected office.
The incumbent may be a member of the minority party in a legislature and would like to gain the advantages of being in the majority party, such as the potential to chair a committee.
The Republican Party was also formed by a massive party switch in 1854 when northern members of the Whig, American and Free Soil parties, along with a few northern Democrats, formed the Republican Party, and many Southern Whigs became Democrats.

 Party-Switchers Affect Governments
State lawmakers have shown again and again in recent years that they're not afraid to switch parties and change the balance of political power, even at the risk of voter backlash.
When U.S. Sen. James Jeffords announced his decision Thursday to leave the Republican Party, it was the first time control of the U.S. Senate would flip because a member switched parties, according to historians.
In earlier years, parties were fueled by patronage, and maintained much stronger loyalty among politicians and voters alike, said Madonna, director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Millersville University in Pennsylvania.

Nineteen members have switched parties since 1976, and this is not counting a few outliers, such as Matthew Martinez, who became a Republican for the last few months of his career after losing in a Democratic primary, and Bob Smith, who left the Republicans briefly, only to return.
Typically, switches occur in states that are changing in party allegiance, such as in Southern states that moved into the Republican column or Northeast states moving in the other direction.

Students have parties switched by bogus petitions   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Scores of college students in Pennsylvania and Oregon have had their voting registrations switched by teams of canvassers circulating bogus petitions and, in some cases, partially concealed voter registration forms students were requested to sign.
After signing their names, the students were pressured into registering with the Republican Party by being told that their signatures otherwise would be invalid, or they were asked to fill out the signature and address portions of blank voter registration forms as proof of citizenship.
Elections officials yesterday said the switch in party registration would not affect the students' eligibility to cast ballots for the candidates of their choice on Nov. 2, although it could determine the party primaries in which they could take part in the future.
