Whips are used at a number of different levels in Irish politics, most notably at the Oireachtas level, but also on urban and county councils as well.
The duties and responsibilities of the Whip are that the members of the party turn up to the chamber to vote when a division is called by the Ceann Comhairle and that the TDs vote on the particular bill or motion as the party has decided.
If a TD is expelled or suspended from a party it is said that they have lost the party whip in that they are no longer a member of the said party and the Whip does not have the responsibility to ensure they vote or not in a particular way.
