Ghorband, a major valley of Kohestan/Kohistan and a sub-province (woloswali) of Parvan province in the southern foothills of the Hindu Kush massif, located approximately 50 miles north of Kabul.

The north eastern provinces of Afghanistan - bordered by the USSR, China, and Pakistan (see inset) - encompass one of the most important gem - producing regions in the world today.
The mines that have recently produced gem material are for the most part in the northeastern portion of the country, north and east of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan (figure 1).
Note in figure 1 that Panjsher Valley has been placed in Kapisa Province, on the basis of the Rand-McNally (1982) and other recent maps used as references to develop this one.

MAHMOOD RAQI: The Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) stationed in the Parwan province, Thursday launched four construction projects in the neighbouring Kapisa province, north of the central capital Kabul.
The projects included construction of a bridge in Tagab, compounds of police stations in Nijrab and Alasai and establishment of a veterinary hospital in the provincial capital Mahmood Raqi.
Saeed, a PRT official in the Parvan province said that the team was also running reconstruction projects in the neighbouring Panjshir besides helping the officials to boost security there.

The United Nations reported that 25 affected families had been taken to a camp set up by Afghan government five kilometres from Bagram Air Base on the road to the capital, Kabul.
The floods affected four villages in Sayyed Khayl District of Parvan Province, located in the delta between the Ghowr Band and Panjshir rivers.

The Afghan opposition has set up a radio station aimed at redressing the gender imbalance in the country's broadcast media.
The new station, which is based in the eastern province of Parvan, to the north of the capital Kabul, has been founded with help from the French organization Droit de Parole (Right to Speak).
The French news agency AFP said that Radio Sol (Ground Radio) was broadcasting for three hours a day on the FM waveband and was able to cover a limited range of about 30km.
