Pasadena is a part of the original Spanish land grant named Rancho del Rincon de San Pascual, so named because it was deeded on Easter Sunday to Eulalia Perez de Guillén Mariné of the San Gabriel Mission.
The Pasadena Unified School District is in charge of the city's 5 high-schools, 3 middle schools, and 24 elementary schools.
Pasadena is also home to the Tournament of Roses Parade, held each year on January 1 (unless that day is a Sunday, in which case the event is held on January 2).

Pasadena is an oddity in that even though it is only 12 miles from central Los Angeles, it remains a self-sufficient metropolis.
