Bach: The Goldberg Variations - Glen Gould, Piano
The later method, which, by stimulating linear inventiveness, suggests a certain analogy with the passacaille style of reiterated bass progression, is strikingly portrayed by Beethoven’s 32 variations in C minor.
However, the vast majority of significant contributions to this form cannot be accurately allotted to either of these general classifications, which, to be sure rather describe the extremities of the working premise of the variation idea wherein the coalescence of these qualities constitutes the real challenge to the composer’s inventive power.
In the canons, the literal imitation is confined to the two upper voices, while the accompanying part, which is present in all but the final canon at the ninth, is left free to convert the tema del basso, in most cases at least, to a suitably acquiescent complement.

Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music | Vol. 10 No. 1 | The Dances in Lully's Persée, Ken Pierce and Jennifer ...
3.25 The Passacaille from Persée is one of Lully’s earliest.
The notations of three of the dances—two from the Act I “Jeux junoniens” (Video 1) and the other the Act V Passacaille (Video 2)—indicate that they were danced in performances of the opera, very probably in the 1703 revival, by Monsieur Balon and Mademoiselle Subligny, the two leading theatrical dancers of their day.
The Passacaille (Video 2) undoubtedly functions choreographically as a duet, and gives every appearance of having been built that way; for example, the dancers move in axial symmetry—that is, around one another—for roughly half the dance, and only occasionally do they direct their attention toward the public.

Another View of the French Harpsichord
Then there is the Huitième ordre's most famous movement, the Passacaille (actually a combination of passacaglia and rondeau), with its passionate theme, its uninhibited expansiveness within strict formal restraints, its massive architecture, and its unrelenting monumental quality, like a tragedy of Racine.
Not all of Couperin is there (there is none of the debonair jauntiness that Stewart brought out so suavely in his encore, Les baricades mistérieuses from the Sixième ordre); but this is surely Couperin at his height.
Ending with the Passacaille, as Stewart did, gives the whole Suite a certain portentousness that Couperin was apparently anxious to avoid.

I like the Passacaille well enough but frankly it is too long and lacks variety, especially rhythmically.
I actually think that driving, rhythmic repetition is what makes a good passacaille when given a good interpretation.
When Matanya Ophee heard the Passacaille performed by Illarionov, he joked that in the dedication to Segovia and Segovia's subsequent neglect of the work, that Segovia was shown to be a man of "impeccable taste." I just doubt Segovia could have played it as written!

Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music | Vol. 2 No. 1 | Silbiger: Passacaglia and Ciaccona: Genre Pairing and Ambiguity ...
The author is working on a larger study of the passacaglia (passacaille) and the ciaccona (chaconne), and welcomes comments and information on the subject.
Many earlier German chaconnes and passacailles owed as much to French as to Italian models, as was true of much eighteenth-century German music.
It is not clear what Louis meant by the title (if indeed it was his), since his chaconnes are generally quite distinct from his passacailles (including the tendency--not uncommon in France--to use rondeau forms as opposed to variation forms), and this one, unlike the one by François, appears to be a straightforward chaconne.

Unlike the free-spirited feeling of the first movement, Ravel instills a sense of purpose in the second movement, with all three voices finishing in unison.
The movement itself is a study in counterpoint, and is in homage to Ravel’s counterpoint and technical instructor André Gedalge, to whom the trio is dedicated.
The heavy resolution at the end of the Passacaille quickly moves into the opening of the Finale, with both strings playing at the top of their register, and the piano sprinkling the final theme over their oscillating trills and chords.

His unaccompanied duets were written primarily for Baroque flutes, but they are easily transposed for other pairs of instruments; they are played tonight on two treble recorders.
The first selection is a sprightly bourrée en rondeau; the second, a passacaille, the French version of the passacaglio, consisting of paired four-measure phrases, and exploring several forms of woodwind articulation and rhythmic inequality.

The Passacaille first appeared around 1686 in a book of guitar pieces.
(The French term passacaille comes from the Italian passacaglia: a musical form based on a slow, stately Italian dance in 3/4 time and with a continuous ground bass.) Among the technical challenges in this piece, the most difficult would be rolling the chords.
This technique is indicated in the notation by a vertical wavy line placed before a chord.

Johannes-Passion BWV 245 - conducted by Paul Dombrecht
For those more patient than I, Passacaille's website (www.passacaille.be) has announced a reissue of the Dombrecht on their label -- in 2004!
Of Dombrecht/Il Fondamento's other Berkshire listings my favorites are the Handel (also the Telemann) Water Music (peerless, IMO; listen to that F Major Bourree!) and their Zelenka, which has been mentioned favorably by List members.
One of their best CDs, IMO, but not offered by Berkshire, is on the Passacaille label: absolutely gorgeous choral pieces, unknown until recently uncovered by Belgian scholars, composed by Alphonse D'Eve and Pietro Torri.
