Passalidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Passalidae is a family of beetles known variously as "bessbugs"
Nearly all of the 500-odd species are tropical; species found in North America are notable for their size, ranging from 20-43 mm, for having a single "horn" on the head, and for a form of social behavior unusual among beetles.

This Neotropical genus greatly resembles Passalidae morphologically and biologically.
I encounter Phrenapates frequently during my field work as they live, like Passalidae, in subsocial colonies in rotten logs (many of which are also inhabited by Passalidae).
These analyses would allow me to research the understudied Southeast Asian and Australian passalid fauna and to address the relationships between worldwide scarabaeoid families such as Passalidae, Lucanidae, Geotrupidae and smaller, geographically restricted families such as the Pleocomidae and Diphyllostomatidae that are found only along the pacific coast of the United States.

That project involves the phylogenetic analysis of relationships among species in the beetle genus Verres (Insecta: Coleoptera: Passalidae: Proculini) and its affinities to other closely related genera.
Characters from both adult and larval morphology will be employed and the resulting "tree" of relationships will be utilized to test historical biogeographic hypotheses about geological relationships of land areas in Mexico and Central America.
Members of the beetle family Passalidae are extremely important components of tropical forest ecosystems.

Glaresidae is the sistergroup of the remaining scarabaeoids and likely reflects the ancestral scarabaeoid due to its large number of unusual plesiomorphies.
Recent evidence suggests that it is a member of the so-called "primitive" scarabaeoids (Passalidae, Lucanidae, Diphyllostomatidae, Trogidae, Bolboceratidae, Pleocomidae and Glaphyridae).

 What's That Bug: Beetles
According to my copy of "A Manual of Common Beetles of Eastern North America", the two beetles pictured are actually members of family Lucanidae, specifically, they appear to be similar to Ceruchus piceus.
However, I realize that my book (given to me when I was about 8 for Christmas), may be out of date, and perhaps some reclassification has occurred.
However, my personal experience with these particular beetles is that they don't live in rotted wood, and tend to be predators in forest undergrowth, as opposed to the more common Passalidae, which I spent my childhood evicting from various logs.
