  Passavas Information
Passavas is a castle in the Mani Peninsula built by the Frankish crusaders to keep the unruly Maniots subdued.
Passavas was in Frankish hands from 1261 when William II Villehardouin, Prince of Achaia was defeated by Michael VIII Palaeologus at the battle of Pelagonia in Macedonia.
In 1601 the garrison was taken by surprise by a raiding Spanish fleet and sacked.

Mani - The location of the Castle of Grand Magne
Signposted beside the main road Passavas is on top of a (now) thickly wooded hill it is identified by Leake as the site of the ancient 'city' of Las.
Kelefa (the name means 'bald' or 'leprous') is atop a huge bluff overlooking the Bay of Itilo A large rectangular construction very similar to Passavas, it is usually ascribed to the rather inept 17th century fortress building skills of the Turks and was certainly one of their corks on the bottle of irascible Maniates.
Passavas is a good example and so to is Zarnata and if one set of people assume a location is good for defence then it generally follows that, saving a complete revolution in weaponry, succeeding generations and ages will pick the self same spot.

Mani Peninsula - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After the Fourth Crusade in 1204, Italian and French knights (known to the Greeks as Franks), occupied parts of the Peloponnese.
In 1249 the Mani was occupied by the Venetians, who made it one of the twelve baronies of the Principality of Moreas and built the fortresses of Mystras, Passavas, Gustema (Beaufort) and Megali Maini.
In 1460 after the fall of Constantinople, Mystras fell to the Ottomans, but the Mani was not subdued and retained its internal self-government in exchange for an annual tribute.
