The monks who saw in the passion flower Christ’s Passion thought that they saw in it a sign from heaven that the Indians of the lands that had been conquered must be converted to Christianity.
When the passion flower was imported into Europe in the 17th century, it was met with enthusiasm not only because of its healing properties but also because it was revered by pious Christians as being a symbol of Christ’s crucifixion.
In marked contrast to the thin, bare green-leaved stems growing to a length of 5 m are the luxuriant blooms of the passion flower, which appear from May to September, reaching a diameter of 8 cm, and which occur in white, blood-red and violet colours.

 Interreligious dialogue
Jesus’ prophetic mission is interpreted as stemming from his compassion for those enslaved by passion and sunk in ignorance and the externalities of legal religion, and his resurrection illustrates for them the continuation of the life of the soul after the death of the body.
Christians, however, might be permitted to wonder whether the conviction with which Muslims affirm the pristine nature of the Qur’anic text is all that different from the confidence which Christians place in the faithful transmission of the message of Christ by New Testament authors.
Thus, while Muslims tend to view Christian historical-critical studies of the Bible as evidence of the human origins of Christian Scripture, that it was not divinely revealed through a prophet, Christians tend to regard Muslim rejection of such studies as applied to the Qur’ân as an indication of a non-scientific, pre-modern approach to Scripture.

Early Christianity should therefore be pictured as a loose patchwork quilt, uniform in its centre but increasingly diverse in its periphery.
Christianity has not been able to integrate the contradictions between the different patterns on the quilt : between Jerusalem and Rome, between West and East, between papacy and imperialism, between accepted and heretical Christologies and Trinitarisms, between Roman and other liturgies, between Reformed and Counter-Reformed, between Tridentine rituals and Vatican II practices, et j'en passe...
