Palm Sunday - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Palm Sunday is a moveable feast in the church calendar observed by Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Christians.
Originally the Roman Catholic Church officially called this Sunday the Second Sunday of the Passion; in 1970 the formal designation was changed to Passion Sunday, a change that has caused considerable confusion because the latter term had heretofore been affixed to the previous Sunday, or the fifth within Lent.
In the Passion Week liturgy, on Palm Sunday palm fronds (or in colder climates some kind of substitutes) are blessed outside the church building and a procession enters, singing, re-enacting the entry into Jerusalem.

 PALM / PASSION SUNDAY - Year C
Although the four passion narratives appear at the end of each of their respective gospels, these special literary witnesses to the saving death of Jesus were actually the first elements of the gospel to be formulated.
Scholars, who have traced the process whereby these passion narratives were developed, agree that the transition from the earliest and simplest creeds, such as “Jesus is Lord!” and “Jesus lives!” to a full-blown narrative of Jesus’ arrest, trial, condemnation, execution and burial was prompted by the growing needs and ever-deepening understanding of the community.
Catechetically, the passion traditions clarified Jesus’ death not as scandal or stumbling block but as the cornerstone on whom the living stones of the church are founded.

The passion narrative weaves together images from the psalms, especially Ps 22 and 69, to portray Jesus’ innocence and brokenness not as a derailment of the divine strategy, shortly to be rectified by resurrection and triumph, but as God’s way and ultimately as God’s being (when we reflect beyond Matthew).
Our role is not to explain it down, but to open it up so that people will have an opportunity like generations before them to find in it their own story and find it in their own story.
