PAP, Password Authentication Protocol   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
These authentication protocols are intended for use primarily by hosts and routers that connect to a PPP network server via switched circuits or dial-up lines, but might be applied to dedicated links as well.
Passwords are sent over the circuit "in the clear", and there is no protection from playback or repeated trial and error attacks.
This authentication method is most appropriately used where a plaintext password must be available to simulate a login at a remote host.

Zvon - RFC 1334 [PPP Authentication Protocols] - Password Authentication Protocol
When the remote host password is kept as a one-way transformed value, and the algorithm for the transform function is implemented in the local server, the plaintext password SHOULD be locally transformed before comparison with the transformed password from the remote host.
PAP Codes are assigned as follows: 1 Authenticate-Request 2 Authenticate-Ack 3 Authenticate-Nak Identifier The Identifier field is one octet and aids in matching requests and replies.
Password The Password field is zero or more octets and indicates the password to be used for authentication.

Password Authentication Protocol - FOLDOC Definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
(PAP) An authentication scheme used by PPP servers to validate the identity of the originator of the connection.
Passwords are sent over the circuit "in the clear" and there is no protection against playback or repeated "trial and error" attacks.
The use of PAP is appropriate, however, if a plaintext password must be available to simulate a login at a remote host.

PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) (Linktionary term)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
PAP is an authentication protocol that requires users to enter a password before accessing a secure system.
The user's name and password are sent over the wire to a server, where they are compared with a database of user account names and passwords.
For additional information, refer to RFC 1994 (PPP Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocols, August 1996).

PAP: Password Authentication Protocol for PPP Links
The Password Authentication Protocol (PAP), a Link Control Protocol in the PPP suite, provides a simple method for the peer to establish its identity using a 2-way handshake.
Passwords are sent over the circuit in text format, and there is no protection from sniffing, playback or repeated trial and error attacks.
PAP is defined by IETF (http://www.ietf.org) RFC 1334 and replaced by RFC 1994.

 MosCom - Password Authentication Protocol
Password Authentication Protocol allows any MosCom Internet subscriber to log-in to his or her dial-up PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) account without going through the fl Terminal Window (and having to type in his or her username and password a second time).
PAP works by sending your username and password to the MosCom server immediately after your modem completes the connection (after modem handshaking is done).
PAP is easier to setup than a log-in script, is more reliable, and requires less updating.

You may need to use this protocol if you are calling a server running an operating system other than Windows.
