Topic: Pastoral theology

  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Pastoral Theology
Pastoral theology is a branch of practical theology; it is essentially a practical science.
Moral theology explains the laws of God and of the Church, the means of grace and hindrances thereto; pastoral theology teaches the practical bearing of these laws, means, and hindrances upon the daily life of the priest, alone and in touch with his people.
The name pastoral theology is new; the science is as old as the Church itself, as appears from the manifold instructions given by Jesus to His Apostles for the care of souls (Matthew 10:6 sqq.

 Theology Today - Vol 37, No. 4 - January 1981 - ARTICLE - How Pastoral Theology Functions
The aim of the present article is to address this problematic from the vantage point of pastoral theology since the task of facilitating the interaction between academic theology and pastoral ministry belongs in a preeminent way to pastoral theology, at least as it is being defined and practiced today.
According to Rahner, pastoral theology (or practical theology, as he prefers) is not limited to the work of the clergy but extends to everything which the church as such has to do.
According to definitions of pastoral theology such as these, there is a mutual interaction between the experiential situation and theological reflection; concrete experience is the starting point and effective pastoral ministry of the church is the goal.

SECULARISM IN CHURCH, THEOLOGY AND PASTORAL CARE
The third heaven is theoria, theology, through which, and by divine Grace and the capture of the nous, one reaches, as is possible, the knowledge of God's mysteries and knows all the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.
Therefore, theology is the third heaven which is a fruit, an outcome of the purification of the heart and the illumination of the nous.
Pastoral care is the work of the Church which aims at admitting man to her Body, at making him her true member.

Whereas biblical studies experienced the challenge of modernity in terms of historical-critical approaches to scripture, pastoral theology experienced it in terms of the emergence of psychology and sociology as disciplines.

FINNEY'S UNPUBLISHED LECTURES ON PASTORAL THEOLOGY
Pastors should never admit that they are out of their appropriate sphere, when urging any claim of God.
In view of Finney's interest in "practical" training for the pastorate, of his dominant position in the seminary, and of his personal eccentricities, it was to be expected that his lectures on Pastoral Theology given in the Senior year would constitute one of the most distinctive and characteristic courses in Oberlin's theological curriculum.
"The legitimate field of Pastoral influence," said Finney, "is as extensive as the field of moral obligations and responsibility." It was desirable, of course, for the minister to be "acquainted with the principles of reform," though he ought not to be an "ultraist" fanatic.

Welcome to The Institute for Pastoral Theology :: What is Pastoral Theology?
This Council is pastoral in its fusion of truth and love, `doctrine' and pastoral solicitude; it wished to reach beyond the dichotomy between pragmatism and doctrinalism, back to the biblical unity in which practice and doctrine are one, a unity grounded in Christ.
By its very nature theology should always be pastoral in orientation, since each generation must appropriate the Church's faith for itself, asking of the faith both the age-old questions and the new questions unique to itself.
Theology can never be content simply to repeat the formulas of the past, but must discover their meaning and relevance for the today in which the Church lives.

 Theology Today - Vol 50, No.1 - April 1993 - ARTICLE - Academic Theology in Pastoral Perspective
The trajectory may be called the overpowering of sapiential theology, with its overtly pastoral agenda as articulated in the patristic age, by academic theology, beginning with the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and the work of Abelard, Lombard, and Thomas and triumphing with the modern university.
Peter Abelard's Christian Theology took a step toward the disengagement of scientia from sapientia in his defense of the Trinity on the basis of sound logic against the dialecticians who "follow the evidence of their senses," without recognizing that the divine dimension of human reason permits a pious yet rational defense of the doctrine.
Here precisely is the gateway by which sapiential theology gave way to academic theology, the point in the history of theology at which clarity of mind eclipsed devotion of the heart.
