Carney's Prose Lacks Moisture - DECEMBER 2000 | Thunderbird Magazine
At "The Author's Dilemma: A Discussion of Political Correctness," a recent talk given at the University of BC, Senator Carney confessed to much irritation over the objections of an unidentified critic, or "Cold Reader," whose comments were the final stage of the publication process of her new autobiography, Trade Secrets.
More than the minor controversies associated with her own writing - challenges which ranged from her outdated reference to a "tin tub" to her use of the term "a fl" in an anecdote - Carney was concerned that in adhering to the principles of political correctness journalists may be practicing a worrying degree of self-censorship.
Despite her characteristic forthrightness, Carney's provocative stance on political correctness was unconvincing, mainly because she failed to acknowledge a critical issue recognized by French semiologists several decades ago: that language has a powerful unconscious dimension.
