Gillick was baseball's G.M. of the 1980s and the first third of the '90s, the man who built the expansion Toronto Blue Jays from last-place jokes into World Series champions in 1992 and 1993.
There is this picture people have of Pat Gillick: He is behind a desk, phone pinned between his ear and shoulder, thumbing through stacks of scouting reports with one hand, a piece of the waiver wire in the other, and, at the same time, communicating somehow with his assistant G.M. sitting in front of him.
Gillick was a lefthanded starter with a big overhand curve and a killer pickoff move, but he had a mediocre, mid-80s fastball.
