His musical career got early support from a dedicated Irish fan base.
At an early gig in Ireland, Gray was introduced by comic playwright Pat Ingoldsby.
After a few marginally successful releases through the 1990s, Gray's breakthrough came with the worldwide release in 1999 of his fourth album, White Ladder; this was a critical and commercial success and included his best-known songs, "This Year's Love", "Babylon" and "Please Forgive Me".

Both were hawking their earlier works from pub to pub, Ken Bruen with his sackful of off-the-wall novels, and Declan Varley with his now classic subculture novel Kittyland.
In this, of course, they followed in the great tradition of MJ Molloy, Pat Tierney and the undisputed King of the Irish street poets, Pat Ingoldsby.
Indeed, I was going to go on and talk about the similarity in many ways between Ken Bruen's offering, The Guards, and Nightmusic, the product from Declan Varley's pen.

Ingoldsby has a deep affection for this child whose love is given out unconditionally to everyone, perfect strangers, winos on the bus, anyone, because she does not know not to do so.
He knows the truth, that everyone is not, and that there are so many people who would be hurtful to her because she is ‘not normal’.
