In fact Fripp has been quoted as saying that Pat is a rock drummer, so Crimson wanted to make a rock, more riff based album so that he could really shine.
Drummer Pat Mastellato is a mad scientist who uses trick effects and bone shattering power to drive things forward.

Pat Mastelloto was pointing right at me showing Trey Gunn I was holding the book and then, I believe inspered by this, gave his drum stikcs to the audiance before leaving for good.

Ground and Sky review - King Crimson - Heavy ConstruKction
Pat Mastelotto is a real monster here, with an array of whacking styles that range from a highly industrialized take on drum ‘n bass, to a more ambient house drumming style, whichever feels appropriate for the improv.
He is a real master of sound here, with drum sounds that come out of a monster movie: pows, whacks, bangs, thunder crashes, gun shots, deep dark rumbles, heartbeats, all manner of crazy sounds, sometimes even carefully placed silent stretches for drama.
Around tracks five and six, the Crim veer into a more exclusively techno/drum ‘n bass territory, where Pat is the highlight.

An even bigger surprise is the continued brilliance of the Bruford/Mastelloto team on two drums-only cuts, 'Mulundrum' and 'KCF', as well as their takes with Tony ('Big Funk') and Trey ('Trey, Pat, and Bill').
The most intriguing parts of this release, however, are the ideas brought by the drummers that the other members added their own parts to ('Pat's Meckanical Fives' and 'Have U Got?').
Here, the Krim gives us a glimpse into a new polyrhythmic style derivative of little else in their history.

Anyone who's seen Pat knows that he usually has a lot to say, and often interjects stories about how this or that piece was composed throughout the performance.
Also included was a stirring rendition of "Caprice of the Gods" on the Baldwin, an atmospheric Japanese sounding piece which is also new, "Free and Alive", "Best Years of our Lives", and a very interesting tune composed from one note called "The Door is Ajar".
Near the end of the show, Pat invited keyboard players from the audience to come on stage and jam with him.

Xcarnation is the brainchild of Turkish guitarist, composer and producer Cenk Eroglu, and is a solid blend of alternative and progressive rock, while also mixing in touches of Eroglu’s Eastern musical influences.
There’s talent galore on this album, which includes a studio lineup of bassist Kip Winger (who sings, wrote one track and co-wrote another), and also drummers Pat Mastelloto of King Crimson and Rog Morgenstein of the Dixie Dregs.
The songs on Grounded range from the Nine Inch Nails-like opener, “Personal Antichrist” to the catchy ballad “Without You,” and a staple of modern progressive numbers.

Over their 30-plus year history, Crimson has possessed two essential saving graces: a self-skewering humor (evidenced here via lyrical self-mockery) and, most importantly, the urge and ability to Rock Like a Motherfucker.
(Along with Fripp, Crimson is now comprised of Adrian Belew and Trey Gunn on guitars and Pat Mastelloto on drums.) Both qualities are evident on Light's first cut, the unfortunately-titled "ProzaKc Blues."
Over an ominously catchy, semi-blues swamp guitar ramble, Belew's voice is digi-fucked into a creepy baritone that sounds like a junked-out Dr. John.
