Pat Smear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pat Smear (born Georg Ruthenberg on August 5, 1959), is a U.S. rock guitarist who has been a regular member of several well-known bands, albeit of different subgenres: The Germs, Nirvana and Foo Fighters.
Smear renamed himself after learning about pap smears in high school, claiming they were the most disgusting thing he had ever heard of.
Smear joined the group from its inception, but because the band's first album was a collection of demos recorded solely by Grohl, he wouldn't appear on a Foo Fighters album until 1997's The Colour and the Shape.

The Papanikolaou test (known colloquially as a Pap test, Pap smear or smear test) is a medical screening method for detecting infectious, premalignant, and malignant processes in the ectocervix, endocervix and endometrium.
In 1988 and 1989, Karen Smith had received pap smears which were argued to have "unequivocally" shown that she had cancer; yet the lab had not made the diagnosis.
Georg Ruthenberg, guitarist for L.A. punk rock band the Germs, renamed himself "Pat Smear" as a reference to the procedure.

His singing is far more assured and presentable — his explosive yells give the record a bit of Hole's melodrama and suggest a stylistic affinity with Nirvana.
Still, Smear's goofy enthusiasm, cool playing and the whole thing's casual, underproduced quality give it a crummy, ass-backwards sort of charm.
