The Tausug, numbering around 502,918 (NCCP--PACT) in 1988 are predominant in the northern part of Sulu province, i.e., Jolo Island and the neighboring islands of Pata, Marunggas, Tapul, and Lugus, and to a lesser extent in Siasi and Pangutaran (Arce 1963:3).
But Sulu was only occupied and made into a protectorate in 1876 when Gov Gen Malcampo, using naval artillery, succeeded in destroying the kota (fort) of Jolo, and prevented the smuggle of ammunition to the besieged forces.
In 1934, Arolas Tulawi of Sulu, Datu Manandang Piang and Datu Blah Sinsuat of Cotabato, and Sultan Alaoya Alonto of Lanao were elected to the 1935 Constitutional Convention.

Pata Vice Mayor Adjili Abbas and his bodyguard were killed on Saturday morning outside the official's house.
Authorities only reported the incident on Tuesday, but officials said security forces were sent to the town to track down the attackers.
It was not immediately known if the Abu Sayyaf group, which is known to actively operate in Sulu, had something to do with the murder.

He was born on the island of Pata, south of Jolo, son of Tantari, a Samal fisherman, and Layhia, a Muslim blueblood.
For the next two years, Jikiri was the unvanquished pirate of the Sulu seas and the subject of a massive manhunt by the Americans as well as by the British who, in 1909, sent Bornean Muslims after him.

Fighting in the island of Pata, in the Sulu archipelago, began Sunday when members of the Malik clan accused the rival Sariul family of stealing weapons from them, the military said.
Four of those killed were fighting on the side of the Sariul family and two for the Malik family, many of whom were ex-fighters of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), the country's largest Muslim separatist group that signed a peace deal with Manila in 1995.
Troops were also dispatched to Pata to prevent escalation of hostilities, the military said.

EIGHT soldiers were wounded in a fierce gun battle with heavily armed Abu Sayyaf bandits, under Commander Radulan Sahiron, at the remote barangay of Pansul, in Patikul, Sulu, late Monday night, a report said Wednesday.
A belated report reaching the Southern Command stated that the marine soldiers from the 62nd Force Reconnaissance Company were on combat patrol in the area when they encountered Sahiron's group in a 30-minute heavy fighting.
The military in the area are still investigating the motive for their feud.
