Following the devastating earthquake in Gujarat in January 2001, a reconstruction initiative was launched by a consortium of 15 agencies in India and abroad for a model rehabilitation programme.
Following the earthquake in District Chamoli, Uttaranchal (March, 1999), SEEDS team along with senior officials of the National Centre for Disaster Management, India visited the affected areas for a rapid assessment of damage, identification of needs for immediate relief and for medium and long term rehabilitation.

Patan, situated about 135 kilometres northwest of Ahmedabad, was the capital of the Solanki dynasty, the last Hindu kings who ruled over much of present day Gujarat from 796 AD to the 13th century.  The beginning of Patan's decline is pegged at 1024 AD, the year Mahmud of Ghazni ransacked the city.
Patan retains the heritage of its imperial past with stunning monuments dotting the city such as the Rani ki Vav (Queens well with steps descending into the well), a heritage structure built by Queen Udaymati in the 11th century, and the Sahastralinga Talav (Lake of a thousand Shiva shrines).
On August 14, between 7.30 pm and 8.30 pm, the Patan district collector has asked the city's residents of Patan to light more than 1,000 lamps and take out a procession, to be called the Sahstra Jyot Yatra, up to the Rani ki Vav.

Almost a year after the most destructive earthquake to hit India in 180 years, it appears that the village of Chhansara of Santalpur Taluka in Patan district of Gujarat has returned to "business as usual." There is no rubble on the streets, and life seems no different from that in any other village in India.
The response of civil society within and outside Gujarat and of the international community was swift and generous.

The Gujarat high court on Tuesday stayed the meeting of the Patan district panchayat for election of president and vice-president of the civic body, which was to be held on Wednesday.
They alleged that under Gujarat District Panchayat President' and Vice-President Election Rules, the meeting for electing the president can be called only after six days of notifying all the members.
They alleged that although the development commissioner, in a meeting on October 29, informed that the meeting will be held on November 9 at the Patan district panchayat office, the venue was later shifted to taluka panchayat office.
