		Pattani (or Patani in Malay) is the post 15th century rendition of Langkasuka, the oldest Malay Kingdom of the Malay Peninsula.
		Their stated goal is to create a Islamic republic in Patani, which frequently put it at odds with Tengku Mahmud who wants to reestablish the Pattanese Sultanate (being a prince himself).
		Patani United Liberation Organization (PULO) is the most well-known Pattani resistance group in southern Thailand.

		Patani was an ancient and independent Malay state before it was conquered by Thais in 1795-96.
		During the Second World War, while Thailand was siding with Japan, and Japanese troops present in Malaya and Southern Thailand, one of the Patani princes, Tun Mahmud Mahyuddin, was collaborating militarily with the British and was promised the restoration of Patani independence after allied victory.
		The flag was approved by the representatives of just about all national movements during the meeting of Patani Liberation Organizations held 4th-5th July 1995 at Tasik Titiwangsa Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur in presence of Special Branch officers of the Government of Malaysia.

		The port of Patani at that time was one of the busiest and wealthiest ports in the region with trade from China, Japan, Portugal and later on the British, apart from the local traders.
		Patani was ruled by a mixture of Sultans and Sultanahs.

		The South Thailand insurgency is a separatist campaign centered in the three southern provinces of Thailand, with violence increasingly spilling over into neighbouring provinces and threatening to extend up to the national capital in Bangkok.
		During World War II, when Thailand under the nationalist regime of Marshal Phibun Songkhram was an ally of Japan, Tengku Mahmud Mahyuddin, a prominent Pattani leader who was the son of the last Raja of Pattani, allied himself with the British in promises that after the war should they win, Pattani would be granted independence.
		After the war, there was an attempt to establish a "Greater Malay Pattani State" (Negara Melayu Patani Raya), but the British gave this movement no support and hopes of an independent Pattani were shattered.

	Tourists Warned by Muslim Separatist Group to Avoid Southern Thailand
		The warning was posted on the web site of the Patani United Liberation Organisation, and attributed to Bersatu, otherwise known as the United Front for the Independence of Pattani.
		"Persons who plan to visit Thailand now are warned not to travel to Patani Raya Region (Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Satun, Songkhla) and the neighbour provinces (Phuket, Phangnga, Krabi and Phatthalung)," said the statement, addressed to "Dear People of the World".
		According to Globalsecurity.org, Bersatu was formed to unify splinter terrorist groups fighting for the independence of the southern provinces, where Muslims make up the majority of the population.

		In 1945, a petition of Malay leaders lead by Tengku Abdul Jalal demanded from the British independence of the 4 southern provinces from Thailand.
		After the war, there was a period where the Greater Pattani State (Negeri Patani Raya) flag rose in Pattani.
		However soon enough, the British broke its war promises; reestablished Thai presence in Pattani and the hopes of an independent Pattani was shattered.

		I would have thought that maybe some of the(apparently)smaller pieces would have been called 'arit',or whatever the applicable Patani word is for an arit.
		It is in form simmilar to the second parang shown (7th photo from the top).
		Rashidi is particularly fond of this parang and uses it especially for "belah kayu" that is, the process of roughing out wood billets for hilts and sheaths and also for butchering carcasses during Hari Raya Korban (muharram).
