Patch (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Patch management is the process of using a strategy and plan of what patches should be applied to which systems at a specified time.
Applying patches to firmware poses special challenges: re-embedding typically small code sets on hardware devices often involves the provision of totally new program code is provided, rather than simply of differences from the previous version.
Patches sometimes become mandatory to fix problems with libraries or with portions of source code for programs in frequent use or in maintenance.

Distinguished from a diff or mod by the fact that a patch is generated by more primitive means than the rest of the program; the classical examples are instructions modified by using the front panel switches, and changes made directly to the binary executable of a program originally written in an HLL.
There is a classic story of a tiger team penetrating a secure military computer that illustrates the danger inherent in binary patches (or, indeed, any patches that you can't - or don't - inspect and examine before installing).
Diff and patch are the standard way of producing and applying updates to Unix files ditributed via Usenet and the Internet, both have been ported to other operating systems.

 Automatic Security Patch Distribution Policy
The CS Computing Committee has approved the use of this type of patch management process on Windows and Linux machines in the department.
Patches will be downloaded as they become available, and every Wednesday morning at approximately 4:00 am, each computer running Linux will install any new patches that have been downloaded.
If the machine was patched at the scheduled time no patches should need to be installed on a subsequent reboot, except in emergency situations.

PatchEasy from SecureSynergy -- Manage security hotfixes, service packs, patches, updates
An automated patch management solution is a solution through which one monitors the patch health of the systems, notifies the administrator about the status of the systems and provides the paths and means to deploy patches.
This is to ensure that the patches would not cause any problems in the existing setup and see if there are any specific prerequisites for the patch to function properly.
Once the patches have been deployed the next step is generate reports to check if the environment is complying with the patch baseline.

Windows Server 2003 gets first patch | CNET News.com
Although security experts--even those at Microsoft itself--had pointed to the company's latest server OS as the first test of the software giant's massive Trustworthy Computing initiative, representatives maintained that the patch did not mean the release had been a failure in its security practices.
Although the patch is rated "critical" for all other operating systems, it is only "moderate" for Server 2003, according to Microsoft's system for grading the severity of the vulnerabilities it addresses.
The patch was not seen as an emergency because the flaw was not being used by hackers, and there were lots of mitigating factors making it less dangerous, he said.

Patch (Unix) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The patch file (also called a patch for short) is a text file that consists of a list of differences and is produced by running the related diff program with the original and updated file as arguments.
It should be noted that patched files do not accumulate any unneeded cruft, which is what some people perceive based on the English meaning of the word; patch is as capable of removing text as it is of adding it.
Patches described here should not be confused with binary patches distributed by closed-source software manufacturers to update binary files containing the program to a new release.
