Patea is the second-largest town in southern Taranaki, New Zealand.
It is 55 kilometres west of Wanganui, on the banks of the Patea River, and had a 2001 population of 1302.
A few miles south of Patea is the small community of Whenuakura where New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell lived as a child.

Patea, in South Taranaki, is situated on the western bank of the Patea River, near the mouth, the main part of the town standing on flat land behind coastal sandhills.
Patea came into existence as a township called Carlyle, which was situated closer to the river mouth than is the main part of the present borough.
General Cameron's force arrived at the mouth of the Patea River on 15 January 1865 and constructed redoubts on both sides of the river.

Patea’s historic Anglican church has been hit twice in the past two weeks and thieves have targeted religious artefacts and icons, leading to speculation about an occult connection.
The more Mr Anderson and Patea police have pondered on the crimes, the more weird the offences have seemed, leading to a strengthening opinion that the thefts might have been carried out by members of some occult or witchcraft group.
Police have appealed for Patea residents to be on the lookout for the stolen items.

Todd Energy chief executive Richard Tweedie has said the Patea prospect is believed to straddle the PEP 38737, 38760 and 38719 permits and appears to be separated into eastern and western parts by a subsurface basement ridge.
The Patea West prospect is interpreted to be on the same structural closure but updip of some of Swift Energy New Zealand's Kauri wells, which have already flowed oil from the shallow Manutahi sandstones.
Patea East-1 is scheduled to test the shallow oil potential of the eastern part of Patea prospect, with the target zone predicted to be at a depth of about 1000-1100 meters.

James Livingston, a founding settler of the Patea district, was born on 7 February 1840, at Darngarroch, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, the son of Janet Kelly and her husband, James Livingston, a farmer.
Livingston distinguished himself in Taranaki in 1868 as a sergeant in the Patea Field Force, formed to oppose Titokowaru's armed resistance to the survey and settlement of Ngati Ruanui tribal lands.
The force withdrew to Patea, but Livingston was awarded the New Zealand War Medal for his part in the campaign.

Horiana (Georgina) Patea was one of the show's final 18 contestants but told Campbell Live last night she was asked to leave after revealing she was three months pregnant.
Ms Patea was sentenced to three years' jail in 2003 after admitting two counts of aggravated burglary and one of aggravated assault in Christchurch.
She said the situation was "similar to last year"when a pregnant Ms Patea auditioned for NZ Idol.
