Paterson Plank Road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Paterson Plank Road is a road in northern New Jersey, with a history dating back two hundred years, that was the main road connecting Paterson and the Hudson River waterfront.
The road is so named because when originally constructed in the 18th century, the portion through the New Jersey Meadowlands consisted of planks laid side-to-side to prevent coach wheels from getting stuck in the swamp.
The road returns to its path along the Carlstadt-East Rutherford border at Route 17 which it crosses over via an overpass, and is then designated as Route 120 and Paterson Plank Road for a distance.

MEADOWLANDS MALL PLAN RAISES TRAFFIC CONCERNS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Concern about traffic on Route 17; Paterson Plank Road; Moonachie Road, which turns into Washington Avenue, and the Route 3-Route 120 interchange was raised during a hearing this week when Mills Corp. of Arlington, Va., presented its plan to the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission.
Traffic consultants hired by the commission -- which is responsible for development and environmental cleanup in the 32-square-mile, 14-town region -- worry that nearly 30 percent of anticipated traffic flowing to and from the mall complex in Carlstadt would affect local streets.
HMDC traffic consultants say there might not be enough latitude to widen the road to two lanes, adding that two large vehicles making a left-hand turn simultaneously might be dangerous.
