Another reason for the failure of a raid may lie in the partial failure of the first Pathfinders, the 'Initial Markers', to arrive, since experience has shown that succeeding Pathfinders, in spite of being equipped with H2S and blind marking equipment, have allowed themselves to be influenced, to a certain extent, by the Initial Markers.
The grouping of the Pathfinders into a Bomber Group of their own made it possible to standardise the equipment and the training, to put new ideas into operation and to immediately evaluate all experiences.
At first Pathfinder crews had to commit themselves to 60 operational flights, but due to this high number there were insufficient volunteers, and the figure was decreased to 45.

Pathfinders operated from here with remarkable success, and this is remembered in the Pathfinder museum and the superb new stained glass window in the chapel.

The birth of the Pathfinder Force in August 1942 and the formation of 156 Squadron at Alconbury, under the control of Wyton, were to set the scene at Warboys for the duration of the war as a Pathfinder Station.
Pathfinder reunions have been held annually at RAF Wyton but, due to fewer Pathfinder veterans attending, it has been decided to discontinue this annual event and their last reunion was held in the Summer of 2002.

R.A.F. There is a 2nd reunion, for all those who served at/done their basic training etc. at No. 7 School of Recruit training, between 1950/1963.
I served at RAF Rattlesden 1960 - 1962 on Bloodhound air to surface missiles.
Hilly joined the RAF in 1936 and was the first Allied pilot to fly a captured German fighter (he flew a captured Bf109 from France to England), and was credited with 17 or 18 kills.

 The Pathfinders
As part of the effort to improve bombing accuracy, a specialised target-finding force was formed in 1942, made up of generally more experienced crews.
The idea was that the Pathfinders would fly ahead of the main bomber stream and use the most modern technology available to locate and mark the target with coloured flares in order to help less experienced and less well-equipped crews to bomb as accurately as possible.
In the darkness an RAF bomber on a 500 or 600 aircraft raid might see no other bombers until it was too late - collisions were an ever-present danger as the RAF developed its technique of swamping enemy defences with hundreds of aircraft, guided to the target by the Pathfinders.

Twenty-one Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers of the Fleet Air Arm are launched in two waves from the deck of the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious to attack the Italian naval base at Taranto in southern Italy.

Considering the fact that we are one of the smallest RAF units, we have one of the largest RAFMAA memberships.
Since it closed as an active airfield the RAF numbers at Chivenor are now a mere 100 or so made up entirely of the SAR helicopter flight and supporting personnel.
I know Martin Paffet well, as we were together on my last posting at Boscombe Down, where he introduced me to the RAF Champs, but he had to dash off for some small reason, (I think his daughter was about to be born or something).
