Pathping - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pathping is a network utility supplied in Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
It combines the functionality of Ping with that of Traceroute (in Windows: tracert), by providing details of the path between two hosts and Ping-like statistics for each node in the path based on samples taken over a time period, depending on how many nodes are between the start and end host.
The advantages of pathping over ping and traceroute are that each node is pinged as the result of a single command, and that the behaviour of nodes is studied over an extended time period, rather than the Ping's default sample of four messages or Traceroute's default single route trace.

JSI Tip 3464. The Windows 2000 PathPing command.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
PathPing is a route tracing tool that combines features of the ping and tracert commands with additional information that neither of those commands provides.
The pathping command sends packets to each router on the way to a final destination over a period of time, and then computes results based on the packets returned from each hop.
The pathping command performs the equivalent of a traceroute to identify which routers are on the path.

Pathping sends multiple Echo Request messages to each router between a source and destination over a period of time and then computes results based on the packets returned from each router.
Because pathping displays the degree of packet loss at any given router or link, you can determine which routers or subnets might be having network problems.
Pathping performs the equivalent of the tracert command by identifying which routers are on the path.

 PathPing - IP trace
Syntax PATHPING [-n] [-h max_hops] [-g host_list] [-p period] [-q num_queries] [-w timeout] [-t] [-R] [-r] target_name Key -n Don't resolve addresses to hostnames -h max_hops Max number of hops to search, default=30 -g host_list Loose source route along host-list up to 9 hosts in dotted decimal notation, separated by spaces.
Pathping is invaluable for determining which routers or subnets may be having network problems - it displays the degree of packet loss at any given router or link.
Pathping sends multiple Echo Request messages to each router between a source and destination over a period of time and computes aggregate results based on the packets returned from each router.

In the sample Pathping output shown in the previous section, routers on hops 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 show packet loss, but no loss is shown on their forwarding link.
Pathping extracts the first router's IP from this message and adds it to the route list and then sends a second ping with a TTL value of 2.
Pathping continues this process, incrementing the TTL by 1 on each iteration, until the target host responds with an ICMP Time Exceeded message or until the TTL value reaches the maximum hop count (default is 30).

Using Pathping   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Pathping is a Windows based command-line tool used to provide information about the path data takes to its intended destination, network latency and network loss at intermediate hops between a source and destination.
Using the pathping tool you can send multiple echo request messages to each router between you (the source) and your intended destination and after a specific amount of time has elapsed, computes the results from the data that it receives back from each router the packets traversed.
Pathping will first display your results as if you were using tracert or traceroute, which is a similar utility to be covered in a separate article.

The pathping command is a route tracing tool that combines features of the ping and tracert commands with additional information that neither of those tools provides.
When pathping is run, you first see the results for the route as it is tested for problems.
The pathping command then displays a busy message for the next 125 seconds (this time varies by the hop count).

Using PATHPING   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
PATHPING sends packets to every router on a path over time, and then analyzes the results over time from each hop.
such as pathping 65.214.43.37, the output will show the hops you go through to get to that IP address, and then will send IP packets to that destination for a set period of time and analyze the results of those packets.
PATHPING is useful because it allows you to figure out the amount of loss that occurs at any router and along any link.
