He was appointed Patriarch of Venice on January 5, 2002, elected President of the Bishops’ Conference of the Triveneta region on April 9, 2002 and created Cardinal on October 21, 2003.
Coming from the Patriarchate of Genoa, he is considered as one of the cardinals who are papabile at the 2005 Papal conclave.
