Topic: Patriarchal Priesthood

Priesthood (Mormonism) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Mormonism, priesthood is considered to be the power and authority to act in the name of God, including the performance of sacred rites and ordinances, and the performance of miracles.
Because Latter Day Saints believe that priesthood authority and keys may be granted only by one who holds that authority or keys, they believe it is important that a person trace their priesthood through a line of succession from a person in the Bible who was known to hold that authority or keys.
The priesthood is conferred on male church-members beginning at age twelve by the laying on of hands of men previously ordained to the priesthood.

Priesthood is the channel for obtaining revelation, the channel through which God reveals himself and his glory, his intents and his purposes, to mankind: The priesthood holds "the key of the mysteries of the kingdom, even the key of the knowledge of God" (D&C 84:19–20; cf.
The patriarchal order of the priesthood is the right of worthy priesthood-holding fathers to preside over their descendants through all ages; it includes the ordinances and blessings of the fulness of the priesthood shared by husbands and wives who are sealed in the temple (see Sealing: Temple Sealings).
Ordination to each different priesthood office is by the authority and under the direction of the presiding priesthood officer in the ward, branch, stake, or mission of the Church where the person resides, by the laying on of hands by one holding appropriate priesthood office and designated to so act.

Analyzing The Different Orders Of The Patriarchal Priesthood
The Sealing keys of the "High Priesthood", or that Priesthood which was restored by Peter, James and John was sufficient to seal an individual into the lower degree of the Celestial Kingdom, but not in the capacity of husbands, wives, or parents.
This being the case it is evident that the office and Priesthood of Church Patriarch must of necessity derive its Priesthood and authority in blessings through the the "High Priesthood" which was restored by Peter, James and John.
That it is indeed the Patriarchal Priesthood is self evident from the fact that in accordance with the law both the office of Church Patriarch and its attending priesthood descend from father to son.

While patriarchal blessings may contain exhortatory or doctrinal content, in my experience they are especially prized for their oracular qualities: these blessings offer individuals a series of specific, textual predictions about God’s plans for their individual futures.
Thus, in seeking evidence about the accuracy of the predictions made in patriarchal blessings, we are forced to turn to the relatively few such blessings that have become public in one form or another.

 Excerpt from The Mormon Hierarchy
Understanding the growing sense of "church" and the increasingly structured view of authority as priesthood is necessary to comprehend the currently elaborate organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
According to current tradition, both the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods functioned in the church after the spring of 1829 when Smith and Cowdery were visited first by John the Baptist, who restored the lesser or Aaronic priesthood, and then by Peter, James, and John, who restored the higher or Melchizedek priesthood.
By contrast, early Mormons understood that priesthood meant divine power (separate from individual faith) that was conferred on mortals and was centered in the relationship of an individual with the powers of deity.
