  Bible - MSN Encarta
The Bible of Judaism is in three distinct parts: the Torah, or Law, also called the books of Moses; the Nebiim, or Prophets, divided into the Earlier and Latter Prophets; and the Ketubim, or Writings, including Psalms, wisdom books, and other diverse literature.
Many confess that the Bible is the full and sufficient guide in all matters of faith and practice; others view the authority of the Bible in the light of tradition, or the continuous belief and practice of the church since apostolic times.
The actual doctrine of the inspiration of the Bible by the Holy Spirit and the inerrancy of its words arose during the 19th century in response to the development of biblical criticism, scholarly studies that seemed to challenge the divine origin of the Bible.

  Bible History
The "patriarchal dispensation" is the covenant between God and the godly seed, Seth, Noah, Abraham, and their descendants...
However, biblical references to the Patriarchal Age correspond to the type of names of persons, the names of particular cities, the names of particular rulers, etc. that can be matched through archaeological discovery to contemporary names of persons, names of particular cities, the names of particular rulers, etc.
The discharge of these offices was not, in patriarchal times, confined to a consecrated class; because the heads of houses rendered them for their families; and in this respect Melchizedek may have acted as the patriarchs.

Bible Archaeology often begins with the early cities of Abraham and the Patriarchs.
Bible Archaeology includes the capital cities of the major ancient empires.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Patriarch
The earlier account (Genesis 4:17-18) gives only the names of the patriarchs there mentioned, with the incidental indication that the city built by Cain was called after his son Henoch.
It states the age at which each patriarch begot his first-born son, the number of years he lived after that event, together with the sum total of the years of his life.
Thus for instance, with regard to the antediluvian patriarchs, while the Samaritan version agrees in the main with the Massoretic text, the age at which Jared begot his first-born is set down as 62 instead of the Hebrew 162.

A clean sweep, therefore, is made of all the patriarchs that preceded Noah and the Flood.
And this neatly excludes any implication that the patriarchs were linked to the corrupt world that had to be destroyed, since the last, and the most aged of them dies immediately prior to the Flood.
Secondly, in the MT the age at which the patriarchs "begot," drops progressively till the beginning of the second half of the list is reached, i.e., Jared.

The list of the ten patriarchs with their abnormally long lifetime resembles that of the first ten Babylonian kings as recorded by Berosus, Eusebius, Chron.
The first number is the age at which the patriarch begot his successor, the second the remainder of his years, the third the total number of his years.
In the Hebrew Bible the number is 1,656, in the Samaritan, 1,307; in the Septuagint, 2,242.

It is essential that we become aware of the issues involved in the rejection of the historical character of the patriarchs.

Patriarchs (Bible) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Patriarchs, known as the Avot in Hebrew, are Abraham, his son Isaac and his grandson Jacob.
Collectively, they are referred to as the three patriarchs (sh'loshet ha-avot) of Judaism, and the period in which they lived is known as the patriarchal period.
In the New Testament, King David is referred to as a patriarch, as are Jacob's twelve sons (the ancestors of the Twelve tribes of Israel).

 The Geneologies of the Bible
The time span from the death of the last of the 10 patriarchs born after the flood to the entering into Egypt was just under 50 years.
Though the word "begot" seems to infer a father and son relationship, supposing that the next patriarch is not the son but perhaps a grandson or great grandson does not change the number of years which the Bible tells us elapsed between the birth of the one patriarch and the birth of the next.
The argument that there are generations between these patriarchs does not at all change the number of years which elapsed between the birth of each patriarch and the birth of the next patriarch if you believe the plain statements of scripture.

WHY did people live longer BEFORE Noah's Flood than they did after it? - at BibleStudy.org
One of the most intriguing facts in the Bible is the immense life spans of the patriarchs before and just after the flood.
This means that the decay rate of the patriarch's death after the flood was only 11% from being a perfect match.
In other words the decay rate for the declining life span for the patriarch after the flood is very close to being a match to the exponential (natural) decay curve.

 Bible Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
The Bible reflects the style of the many people involved, but it is from God, and should be respected as such.
Another source of differences in Bible versions come from the fact that there is more than one way to translate the same thing, depending on style, target vocabulary, translation philosophy, etc. These differences are generally not difficult to deal with though, because they mean the same thing.
The New American Standard Bible (1977) is almost as good as the NASB95, except that it reverts to archaic English in the Psalms and in the language of prayer, and is a little harder to read.

Apologetics Press - The Bible, Science, and the Ages of the Patriarchs
As one reads through the Bible, on occasion he is confronted with statements, situations, or events that, at first glance, seem to be either impossible or improbable—when viewed from a distinctly modern vantage point.
The Bible similarly presents compelling evidence to eliminate the idea that men’s ages should be divided by 12 in order to arrive at an accurate figure for the number of years they actually lived.
Another suggestion offered in response to the patriarchs’ vast ages is that these ages appear larger than normal because “some primitive people measure their age not from the time of their birth, but from the time they produce offspring, or are accepted as an adult in the community in which they live” (Clayton, 1978a, 5[6]:12).

Patriarchs - The Book of Genesis - Myth or History?
As the stories of the Patriarchs are among the most prominent and widely known mythological tales, attracting attention from many quarters and because of various reasons; it is obvious that there are many pros and cons about the historicity of the Old Testament.
The possibility that the Patriarchs are composite characters does not reduce the historicity of the stories, only extends them into wider areas and deeper periods.
About later periods, and the lack of corroborative information between the tales of the Bible and the non-biblical, mainly Egyptian, sources, there are a number of points to which I intend to draw attention, without expressing any personal views in the matter.

Can you explain the great disparity between pre- and post-Flood life spans?
The average age of the pre-flood patriarchs (Genesis 5), excluding Enoch (who was taken away for his protection) and Noah (whose life extended well beyond the flood) was about 907 years.
This is figured from the patriarchs who are listed in Genesis 11, when the average lifespan was about 459 years.
Psalm 90:10, written by Moses, states, “The days of our years are threescore years and ten and if by reason of strength they are fourscore years.” Even in Moses’ time, it was well understood that the average lifespan was usually 70 years, and occasionally in the range of 80, if one were in good health.

Since the Bible is a religious book, many scholars take the position that it is biased and cannot be trusted unless we have corroborating evidence from extra-Biblical sources.
In other words, the Bible is guilty until proven innocent, and a lack of outside evidence places the Biblical account in doubt.
Although it is not possible to verify every incident in the Bible, the discoveries of archaeology since the mid 1800s have demonstrated the reliability and plausibility of the Bible narrative.
