Holloway was born in Atascadero, CA, in 1946 and grew up in the Watts section of Los Angeles; as a child, she learned violin and began singing in church with her younger sister Patrice (who later became a prominent session singer and contributed vocals to Josie & the Pussycats).
Holloway's second album, The Artistry of Brenda Holloway, was finally released in 1968, but that year she announced her retirement from the music business, citing her disillusionment with Motown and her fears of being drawn into the stereotypical hedonistic lifestyle (which conflicted with her still-deep religious convictions).
Holloway's records remained popular on England's so-called "Northern soul" scene, and in 1987 she traveled to the U.K. to record several Motown-style singles for producer Ian Levine's Motorcity label.

Patrice’s performances on these recordings may be the epitome of ‘60s femme soul, and that’s in the context of fl American soul music being the highest art form of its time.
Perhaps because Patrice and Brenda were West Coast girls, rather than Detroit doyennes, the Motown moguls failed to capitalise on the magic the Holloway sisters possessed, but at least time is kinder and rare recordings are being salvaged from the Motown cellars to meet the voracious demands for soul music.
Patrice, though, remains our angel, and the Capitol recordings she made in the mid-‘60s capture exactly why the soul music of that time is so special.

Brenda Holloway proved adept at adaptation, too, when she, among other singers, replaced an ailing Tammi Terrell in concert with Marvin Gaye.

Holloway’s presence gives the songs from the 1970s “band” a nice poppy R&B feel, to the point where, when listening to the complete recordings set released by Rhino Handmade a few years ago (sadly out of print now), the resemblance to the early Jackson Five is almost eerie.

Before being immortalised in cartoon form Patrice cut some tracks for Motown which have never been released and recorded a few singles for Capitol in the mid-60s, one of which was the terrific double whammy of "Love And Desire" with the flipside "Ecstasy" from 1967.

But their songs, ten of which are on their one and only rare LP, were sung by pretty accomplished vocalists, particularly Patrice Holloway, sister of soul star Brenda Holloway.
That doesn't make this album a major musical landmark by any means, but those who would dismiss it as lightweight kiddie stuff might be surprised to find that it's fairly sturdy soul-pop.
