  Cornwall v. State. (2/16/96) ap-1460
Cornwall renews her argument that DFYS's assertion of emergency custody was not "custody" for purposes of the custodial interference statute.
Cornwall asserts that she "could not be charged with custodial interference because she maintained her status as A.H.'s sole lawful custodian until a court order altered this relationship and until she was served with notice that the court had done so".
Cornwall argues that Grober's testimony was relevant to the interference with official proceedings charge because Grober's testimony tended to establish Cornwall's belief concerning whether she was A.H.'s lawful custodian.

Reviews -- Books -- Portrait of a Killer, by Patricia Cornwall
Cornwall is less skilled at putting together a coherent and chronological book, but I think most of that was due to her writing it for a general audience, and editing it to keep interest throughout.
Cornwall frequently lists the myriad of errors they made in their investigation (it's a good thing they didn't arrest anyone as the Ripper, since they'd certainly have gotten the wrong man) though she's not entirely unsympathetic.
Some good, if rather brief discussion of Cornwall's man, the famous painter Walter Sickert, and a good sampling of the general critical reaction to her book can be found in an updated chapter on the Crime Library discussion of Jack the Ripper.

With training in forensic pathology herself, and a string of awards for her books, Miss Cornwall's achievements have elevated her to the top of the queue of authors waiting to be read by this reviewer.
Cornwall has her forensic pathologist character, Dr Kay Scarpetta, lead the investigation into a series of killings, and her knowledge of the forensic pathology involved is highly impressive.
As if she were aware of the need for these "cozy" qualities, Patricia Cornwall introduced a niece for Dr Kay Scarpetta in her first book which I am now reading, allowing something like maternalism to soften the otherwise strong feminist atmosphere that pervades "All That Remains".

Patricia Cornwell's heroine Dr. Kay Scarpetta is back; this time to solve the mystery of the death of an Associated Press reporter who was killed while nosing about in a decommissioned navy yard.
Scarpetta's involvement in the case leads her to be targeted for murder herself by a nasty little neo-fascist cult with delusions of grandeur that include a plan to "kill and maim, frighten, brainwash and torture" all who oppose their plan to rule the world.
This is what Patricia Cornwell offers, so I picked up *Cause of Death* and read it during a recent vacation trip (fortunately for me, I was able to check it out from the library).

Nonetheless, though Cornwall isn't at her 5-star best these days, her writing style is still better than most of the bestsellers out there.
Patricia Cornwall's imagery used to be so creative and well-constructed; I loved how she could paint a vivid picture in so few, but perfectly-chosen, words.

She even admits herself that Sickert never dated his corrispondence or kept diaries but she somehow manages to pin every whitechaple murder on him by stating he was in london that night.
While Patricia Cornwell -- who destroyed at least one Sickert painting in her quest -- is a passable fiction writer, her real-life investigations are nothing short of demented.
Patricia Cornwall has done a major hatchet job on Walter Sickert the famous British artist and champion of the impressionists.

Casebook: Jack the Ripper - Message Boards: Archive through September 23, 2003
Sickert's art is, I think, rather tender towards women and most of what Patricia Cornwell read into the paintings and sketches simply demonstrated her ignorance of art of the time.
Patricia Cornwall wrote a good book with lots of solid facts and looked at the case from a new angle.
Patricia Cornwell did not do this, she said "Walter Sickert WAS the Ripper" and continually throughout her book said "Walter Sickert did this" and "Walter Sickert did that", rather than "I believe Walter Sickert did this" and "in my opinion Walter Sickert may have done that".

I just finished reading Patricia Cornwall's book, detailing her theory of the artist Walter Sickert being Jack the Ripper.
Anyone of us who knows, or is, an artist knows that under no circumstances do they ever create art that is based on current events in the news.
Basically, I see that there is a basic profile built about Jack the Ripper, serial killer, and Cornwall set out to fit Sickert's life into the convenient slots.

I do remember though a very interesting interview with novelist Patricia Cornwall a year or so ago about the case.
She's written a book about it and firmly believes that Jack the Ripper was Walter Sickert, a well known and respected painter of the time.
I did find his take and approach to be very interesting, but he discounts alot of Cornwall's book as "suiting circumstance to theory" (The quoted text is my take).
