Patrician - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the time of the late Roman Empire, the term patrician was a specific title given to a high court official.
The Latin word for "patrician" is patricius (plural patricii).
Perhaps as result, the prestige and meaning of the status eventually degraded; by the end of the crisis of the third century, patrician status as it had been understood in the Republic ceased to have meaning in everyday life.

Patricius died in Rome, and was buried in the church of St. Onophrius, in the tomb of his colleague Torquato Tasso.
In spite of his continual controversies with the Aristotelians, Patricius managed to make a comprehensive study of contemporary science, publishing in 15 books a treatise on the New Geometry (1587), as well as works on history, rhetoric and the art of war.
Patricius' theory of the universe is that, from God there emanated Light which extends throughout space and is the explanation of all development.

Moreover, this return to the bathhouse raises the textual ghost, at least, of Patricius and his carnal sacrifice, for it would be difficult for Augustine's readers to forget the horror of the first bathhouse scene.

Patricius was not without generous qualities, but these were largely dormant and became animate only later, in response to Monica's unflagging prayers and exemplary Christian behavior.
Whatever Monica felt towards her betrothed, she was obedient to her parents' will, consoling herself with the thought that here was a lost soul that was being entrusted to her, and she determined to sacrifice herself to the task of guiding this soul onto the path to salvation.
She firmly believed that if the light of the Gospel was reflected in all her actions, then Patricius would eventually be persuaded of its power and its truth, and would submit to it more readily than if she attempted to persuade him with rational arguments.

When she married Patricius she was a girl very reserved and cold to all appearances (in reality, she was very passionate), precise in attending to her religious duties, even a little strict, with her exaggeration of the Christian austerity in her hate of all the brutalities and all the careless morals that paganism condoned.
Patricius was most eager to do this for his son, who at Madaura had shewn himself a very brilliant pupil and ought not therefore to be pulled up half-way down the course.
