Paris, September 6 {No.99-180} - UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor has today appointed French astronaut Patrick Baudry as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador "in recognition of his contribution to the promotion of the ideals of the Organisation and his personal commitment, in his role as astronaut, to youth education and a culture of peace".
In the ceremony to mark the appointment, Federico Mayor praised Patrick Baudry as a man belonging to "an avant-garde thanks to which the universe is no longer outside man's experience".
Patrick Baudry, a colonel in the French Air Force and today a test pilot for Airbus Industrie, was selected by the French and Soviet Space Agencies in 1980.

 Space Shuttle mission STS-51 E;
Baudry was reassigned to STS-51G together with the rest of the original STS-51D crew led by Commander Dan Brandenstein, only Payload Specialist Greg Jarvis had to give his place to Sultan Salman Al Saud from Saudi Arabia who was invited to watch the launch of the Arabsat satellite from space.
Baudry became an astronaut in 1980 and trained in Star City as a back up to Jean-Loupe Crétien for the first Soviet-French space mission in 1982.
Baudry was reassigned to STS-51G so his name would have to be replaced with that of Walker, but the orbiter changed also from Challenger to Discovery so the Challenger patch could not be used anymore.

The patch manufacturer chose to simply cut off the fixed Baudry tabs from the emblems and create the third version of the patch by adding a seperately sewn on tab with the names of both Baudry and Garn instead.
By adding a tab to a patch with a sewn instead of an overlock border, there was no way to work around the dark blue background twill the patch had been embroidered to and a small part of the original Baudry tab was still visible.
Later versions of the emblem - still using the same Baudry-only design - were therefore sewn on light blue twill and even had a minor reconstruction of the border.
