Sloan (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The band was formed in 1991 when Chris Murphy and Andrew Scott met at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in Halifax; Patrick Pentland and Jay Ferguson joined soon after.
In 1992 the band created their own record label, Murderecords, for themselves and other Halifax area bands, and released the Peppermint EP.
Although Murphy originally wrote the bulk of the songs, on their recent albums he shares head-writing duties with Pentland, while Scott and Ferguson play a less significant role.

According to Patrick Pentland the title was thought up by fellow band-mate Chris [Murphy].
According to Pentland the dark streak is sort of intentional.
Pentland says this doesn't happen very often, though, as everyone has different influences which in turn gives everyone a different style of writing.

Few groups in Canadian popular music have had as consistent a career as Sloan, which comprises guitarists Jay Ferguson and Patrick Pentland, bassist Chris Murphy and drummer Andrew Scott.
Never really reaching a career peak or crash, the band has managed to maintain a solid fan base over the past 12 years, appealing to critics and the rock hipster crowd while simultaneously reaching out to a reasonably mainstream audience.
Pentland will become a new father this fall as well.

It's a moment of rhetorical reflection, perhaps, but if Murphy really is looking for a grounding force, he may consider hiring one: it seems to have worked for Sloan on their seventh and latest disc,Action Pact (in stores Aug. 19).
Pentland's bond with Rothrock may be reflected in Action Pact's power-pop-centric track list.
Pentland also admits that Scott's adventurous style would have been a tough fit on the pop-oriented Action Pact.

Four distinct songwriting voices -- guitarists Patrick Pentland and Jay Ferguson, bassist Chris Murphy and drummer Andrew Scot -- that nonetheless form a cohesive collective.
However, for Pentland, the relocation to the coast wasn't just a good excuse to work on suntans.
But fans shouldn't fret that Scott got the shaft from Rothrock's song selection; Scott simply had his hands full with a new baby daughter Stirling (born in March 2002), and was more preoccupied with changing diapers than writing songs (and wisely refrained from writing songs about changing diapers).

"The Nils," Sloan's Patrick Pentland said when reached for comment, "were one of the reasons I kept banging away on the guitar when everyone else in my life was talking about 9-to-5 and what size suit jacket I would have to wear.
Pentland stressed each time he played in a "punk pick-up band" he brought at least one Nils cover to the table, "because you had to if you were going to do it right."
That point was emphasized years after the demise of Soria's legendary band when a Montreal-based label assembled a handful of Canadian punk bands for a Nils tribute album.

Maybe it’s because their musical career has had more starts and thrills than a rush-hour ride on Deerfoot Trail, but Sloan guitarist-vocalist Patrick Pentland and drummer-vocalist Andrew Scott have managed to turn the looking glass inside out while examining their band’s musical journey.
If it sounds like Scott doth protest too much, Pentland backs up his claims and gives a unique take on an industry in which everyone from world-renowned artists like Paul McCartney to local artists like Mike Stack make a point of owning their own recordings, and thus the control that goes with them.
Of their role as the belle of the musical ball, Scott says the band has never sold enough albums to be knocked by critics or music lovers, like Our Lady Peace or Sum 41 have.

Live, however, the pace was considerably slower, turning a punchy, up-tempo rock song into a sludgy behemoth that never quite got off the ground.
When a soggy beat also stilted drummer Andrew Scott’s otherwise rampaging “Sensory Deprivation,” guitarist Patrick Pentland joked dryly to Scott that he needed to “pick a beat and stick to it.” These are seasoned performers, though, and after a few songs, most of the problems had been shrugged off.
Sloan’s perfect marriage of all these disparate personalities was best exemplified by their heavenly take on Smeared‘s “500 Up,” which expertly interwove separate lead vocals by Pentland, Murphy, and Scott—plus immaculate group harmonies—over a bed of driving dream-pop guitars.

With four wildly different singer-songwriters in the band, it's disappointing how bassist Chris Murphy and guitarist Patrick Pentland dominate the track selections.
Certainly they are the most consistent composers, but drummer Andrew Scott and guitarist Jay Ferguson have written quite a few nuggets over the years.
Pentland's "All Used Up" comes straight out of '80s glam metal with its slippery riffs and wailing guitar solo, and Murphy's "Try to Make It" casts the band as a new wave act with Cars-style guitars and cheesy synthesizer.

"At the heart of the travelling band/You have to understand," sang guitarist Patrick Pentland onstage last November at the final stop of that particular North American road trip, "There's a driving need to hit the yellow line" (from the crowd-pleasing rave-up "Money City Maniacs").
As long as Sloan continue to hit that line, but not cross over it and veer out of control, they'll be embodying what Rock Music (and Sloan Music) is all about—keeping a wayward used automobile on the road until the inevitable rock 'n' roll crash and burn.
