The first Slackware release, 1.00, was on July 16, 1993 [1] by Patrick Volkerding, founder and lead developer.
This was explained by Patrick Volkerding [2] as a marketing effort to show that Slackware was as up-to-date as other Linux distributions, many of which had release numbers of 6 at the time.
In 2004, Patrick Volkerding became seriously ill and the future development of Slackware became uncertain.

Volkerding said he had started feeling some symptoms as far back as May 2001.

Slackware, started by Patrick Volkerding in late 1992, and initially released to the world on July 17, 1993, was the first Linux distribution to achieve widespread use.
Volkerding first learned of Linux when he needed an inexpensive LISP interpreter for a project.
Along the way, Patrick added new things to Slackware; a user friendly installation program based on a menuing system, as well as the concept of package management, which allows users to easily add, remove, or upgrade software packages on their systems.

I don't know Patrick, but I hope someone who does can convince him, on the phone, that he should not necessarily be making decisions right now, he may not be in the space to.
Patrick should be ready for a very long recovery time with some nasty side effects along the way.
Even if Patrick is not religious, knowing that many people are keeping him in their thoughts may produce a similar effect.

It's really good to see Patrick is back on top of things, not just for Slackware but for himself.
As for Patrick, I am very happy that he is getting his health back, and I wish him the best with Slackware in whatever direction he takes it.
Even without Gnome, it is still the most versatile and powerful distro in my opinion, and I am sure it will serve its non-Gnome users very well as always.

Patrick has given his blood, sweat, and tears to the open source community for years in Slackware, one of the oldest surviving Linux distributions.
Hopefully Patrick will take some of the advice and get himself fixed up soon.
From what I am reading I'm not sure he is aware how serious this is. I wouldn't be waiting till friday.

Many of today's new Linux users wouldn't have a clue as to who Patrick Volkerding is. For the brigade whose main arguments are over the merits of this GUI and that, the word Slackware wouldn't ring a bell either.
In early 1993, he started the distribution called Slackware which was basically an attempt to address many of the problems people faced with SoftLanding System Linux, the first and only commercial Linux at the time.
While most other commercial Linux distributions have problems balancing the books, Volkerding hasn't had to worry since he decided in 1994 that the only way to keep the project going was to find some way to fund it.

For those who do not know, Patrick Volkerding, the creator and maintainer of Slackware Linux and a person that has devoted more than 11 years of his life on the slackware project and has contributed much to the linux community, had an adventure with his health some months ago that troubled him much.
As a slackware fan, I would like to encourage all those that use slackware and like it or benefit from it, to order the upcoming 10.1 release as a token of their support.
I support slackware to the fullest and have been using it for quite some time now on my laptops and Id hate to see the guy who made it possible, well, what i mean goes without saying.

I know that i would like to have glibc2 on my linux, but Patrick Volkerding thaught that this new glibc is in a beta stage, so it is some "dangerous" to put in the new distribution.

Honestly, Slackware is Pat Volkerding, and he has to follow his philosophies, not what the community and it's infinite fragments believe Slackware's philosophy to be.
This is the problem: it is a one man distribution basically, not a community project like Debian or Gentoo.
Yes, I think Patrick is not human but nobody is perfect and the best in linux is community sense.
