  Watson, Patrick
Watson was the co-producer for the first season of Seven Days, and became the on-air co-host and interviewer in the second year in a move that the CBC management thought would curb some of the more controversial ideas and methods of the series.
Watson and the extraordinary team of producers and writers assembled for the series (many became influential documentarists and producers through the 1960s and 1970s) became even more innovative and "in-your-face" with their journalism, daring the CBC management to take action.
Watson's years as chair of the CBC board of directors were difficult ones for him and the corporation.

Watson was one of five children born into a cultured Toronto family whose high-spirited dinner-table debates on the arts, politics, books and social issues gave him a deep curiosity for knowledge and communication and an inclination toward English and the theatre.
Watson was chosen for the part of an elderly farmer who breaks away from the spectators along the highway and runs to greet Terry Fox as he passes on his Marathon of Hope journey across Ontario.
For the part, the director asked Watson to replace his regular false leg with a peg leg that would be visible in the film.

Our Public Airwaves - Patrick Watson the magician
It was only after that incident that Watson, wearing various forms of prostheses, began to travel the globe and learned to fly a plane, earning a commercial pilot's license and becoming a full-fledged instructor.
A critical aspect of his success, both in Seven Days and the later shows, was Watson's ability to seem as relaxed as possible in front of the camera, as if he were having a casual conversation with a single viewer.
The book provides a full and fascinating account of Watson's battles with CBC management, a marathon struggle that began with Seven Days (deemed too provocative, it was cancelled after two seasons) and continued, with occasional lulls, for 30 years.

Interview: Patrick Watson of Weezer, November 1996
Patrick seems to have found a certain happiness in his life.
And, unlike MTV, Weezer will be on tour, continuously playing music and by the time you read this, they will have flown from Vancouver to L.A., to make another video, before flying to Denver to resume their tour.
Unfortunately, they will have had to cancel their show in Salt Lake City, which is dangerous, seeing the people will probably sic God on them, but Patrick welcomed the idea.

Montreal Mirror - Music : Patrick Watson
Straddling the lines of classical and pop, jazz and folk and the avant-garde, Watson's compositions at times reach sublime heights, achieving an emotional resonance matched by few of his local peers - a few of whom share credits on the CD.
Furthermore, Ordinary Day benefits from the vision of Watson's collaborator and girlfriend, photographer Brigitte Henry, as well as that of video designer Gabriel C.D. Watson's last project Waterproof9 tied particularly murky, abstract soundscaping to Henry's kick of the time, underwater photography.
The bottom line, though, is the music, about which Watson has plenty to say (and more he'd rather not say).
