Lingua Francas for Design..., by Thomas Erickson
Most use of pattern languages appears to be by those outside the architecture profession: designer-builders, and people with no design training whatsoever who simply wish to remodel or build their own homes [14].
Each pattern is presented in a standard form which provides a prototypic example of the pattern, describes its relationship to other patterns of larger and smaller scales, as well as describing the pattern's rationale and implementation.
Because the patterns of any given pattern language are specific to the domain, and because they are accessible to anyone who understands that domain (most particularly, the users), the patterns can be bound to the particulars of the situation and used to ground the design discussion (as occurred in the case of Manteo).

The construction of the pattern language, however, is not the sole goal; if the participatory process unfolds "correctly" the community that collaborated in the process will be stronger and smarter and therefore better equipped to deal with the issues before them.
To encourage the collection of patterns from all over the world, to be able to display these patterns easily and inexpensively, to facilitate the creation of a pattern language, and to keep the administrative burden as low as possible we devised a pattern management system.
Authors can edit their patterns at any time and they can indicate which of several options they'd prefer for their pattern including whether it should be reviewed for presentation, whether it should be made public, and whether identifying information or email address should be displayed on the pattern.

Usability Pattern Languages: the "Language" Aspect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A language should generate artifacts aligned to the philosophy on which the language is based; the artifact does not have to be derived directly from the philosophy.
Pattern languages, while they are less simple to produce, provide a way to achieve the design goal of conceptual integrity, thereby producing a more consistent user interface, and better support for reuse and maintainability.
Pattern languages also support an iterative design process: a well-integrated language allows software to be developed with some patterns, then improved with more patterns from the language at a later date.

A Pattern Language for Pattern Writing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
As the patterns community has accumulated experience in writing and reviewing patterns and pattern languages, we have begun to develop insight into pattern-writing techniques and approaches that have been observed to be particularly effective at addressing certain recurring problems.
The language is targeted at both novice and experienced pattern writers: novices may choose to treat these patterns as suggestions to be tried and to be adopted where they help, experts can use these patterns as a form of checklist, helping them keep in mind some of the issues and forces in effective pattern writing.
It is not the primary purpose of this pattern language to define the concept of a pattern or a pattern language.

 Anatomy of a Pattern Language
Thus, for a single pattern to work fully, it must not only be followed through by implementing the smaller patterns that complete it, it must if at all possible be connected to certain larger patterns.
A hierarchy of parts is not a formal part of a pattern language, but constructing such a hierarchy is a good way to begin defining a pattern language, as suggested by Alexander and others in some early treatises on the Pattern Language.
And each pattern must have successor patterns directly under it, and successor patterns under those in turn, so that together all of the problems that might come up are resolved, thus making the language functionally and morphologically complete.

So, one of the efforts of the pattern language was not merely to try and identify structural features which would make the environment positive or nurturing, but also to do it in a fashion which could be in everybody's hands, so that the whole thing would effectively then generate itself.
We were always looking for the capacity of a pattern language to generate coherence, and that was the most vital test used, again and again, during the process of creating a language.
However, in the huge effort of creating a believable, new, pattern language, in the 1960’s the effort went entirely onto the individual patterns (their formulation, verification etc.), and the idea that they were to be used sequentially, one after the other, dropped into the background.

This pattern language consists of the terms of art of the practice, the models that the Community uses to express itself and to translate reality, and the grammar that the Community uses to organize the models and terms of art.
The forms and earlier explorations become part of the pattern language, change the shape of the models of the Community and eventually become codified in such a way that they can be readily understood by a novice or a lay person.
This language must also be coherent enough to allow itself to be codified and translated to other Communities of Practice to be used and adapted to suit their particular needs and visions.

Perhaps more importantly, there is no sense of the scope of the general pattern language writing project and therefore no public agenda for future efforts in pattern writing, as the impetus to produce pattern languages arises from either personal or organisational interest in a specific corner of a larger domain.
An "architecturally sensitive usability pattern" to refers to a technique or mechanism that should be applied to the design of the architecture of a software system in order to address a need identified by a usability property at the requirements stage.
These patterns encapsulate the results of experiments on speech dialogues and multimodal output for older adults, and are intended to reflect the experience of older adults gained through experimentation and observation, and inform new designers of speech systems for older adults, who lack the experience, thus nurturing, and providing a framework for, good design.

These patterns can never be "designed" or "built" in one fell swoop- but patient piecemeal growth, designed in such a way that every individual act is always helping to create or generate these larger global patterns, will, slowly and surely, over the years, make a community that has these global patterns in it.
These are the patterns which can be "desiged" or "built"- the patterns which define the indivual buildings and the space between buildings; where we are dealing for the first time with patterns that are under the control of individuals or small groups of individuals, who are able to build the patterns all at once.
Within the buildings' wings, lay out the entrances, the gardens, courtyards, roofs, and terraces: shape both the volume of the buildings and the volume of the space between the buildings at the same time- remembering that indoor space and outdoor space, yin and yang, must always get their shape together.

Once you get this overview, you will then be able to find the patterns which are relevant to your own project and from these, using neighboring patterns in the network, able to identify other patterns that you may want to include.
A sub-set of these patterns is also a language and constructing such a language is a fundamental step to creating a coherent picture for whatever project you have in mind.
A small sequence of patterns could also be a language for a envisioning a smaller part of the environment; and this small list of patterns is then capable of generating a million parks, paths, houses, workshops, or gardens.
