Scialfa's promise that she's "got a bottle of wine, a bag of tricks" and "a place for you under my fingertips" is a gentle bit of eroticism, but could be aimed at her guitar as easily as at a man. She's in love with herself and the way she's making her living.
Maybe that's what 1988 was for Scialfa, the moment that she realized that she got the guy and the life she never thought would be hers, and in doing so, cut herself off completely from whatever had been hers and hers alone in New York City.

Morning Edition, July 28, 2004 · Singer Patti Scialfa's new CD was a long time coming -- her previous solo release was in 1993.
Scialfa, who joined Springsteen's E Street Band in 1984, needed an opening song for the album.

Ignoring the fact that Patti Scialfa is married to Bruce Springsteen, it's easy to hear the musical cache she brings to the table, particularly within the confines of 23RD STREET LULLABY, her second album in over a decade.
Scialfa uses her days spent as a struggling New York City musician in the late 1970s and early '80s for inspiration, and rang up a few buddies from back in that time of her life.
Reminiscing about her days in the Chelsea section of Manhattan (see the atmospheric title cut), Scialfa writes about bad seeds (a twangy "City Boys"), fun-seeking waitresses (the doo-wop harmony-laden "Rose"), and grease monkeys (a wistful "Chelsea Avenue").

 Boston.com / A&E / Music / CD reviews / Patti Scialfa: 23rd Street Lullaby
By all appearances, Patti Scialfa should be on top of the world.
Scialfa also over-emotes at times, as on "Chelsea Avenue" with its line "didn't we love to love to love." There are a couple of fun songs in the mildly funky "City Boys" and the picaresque title track (about drinking wine and recalling romance), but these are the exceptions.
While no one expects her to sing about her marriage to the notoriously private Springsteen, it would have been nice to have something more connected to the modern era.
