  Kids.Net.Au - Encyclopedia > Hole (band)
Hole's band members have changed frequently over the years, the line-up of Hole's last album "Celebrity Skin" (1998) was Love (lead vocals), Melissa Auf der Maur (bass), Eric Erlandson (guitars), and Patty Schemel (drums).
Although Love's flamboyant personality and controversial statements have often overshadowed the reception of Hole's music, it should be stressed that Hole's band members comprised some of the finest musicians in the world.
Both Erlandson and Auf der Maur excelled in their instruments, and Patty Schemel has to be counted among the top-five female drummers in the world.

And to make matters worse, a DJ claiming to have co-written her new single is threatening to launch yet another law suit against the troubled star.
Schemel has been speaking about Love's tribulations in the week marking the tenth anniversary of Cobain's death, explaining she feels it cannot be not long before the ex-Hole singer will self-destruct.
Schemel was speaking in a week that has seen the release of a book by music writers Max Wallace and Ian Halpern, 'Love & Death: The Murder Of Kurt Cobain', implying that Love may have actually murdered her husband.

Schemel hasn't just been on the road, she's been in the studio as well, with veteran bassist Greta Brinkman (Moby, L7, Debbie Harry, Unseen Force) and brother Larry on Lucid Nation's Tacoma Ballet (Brain Floss).
Nothing subtle here: The album features 32 tracks of pure Schemel bashing, and grooves she hasn't been able to put to tape until now.
All that writing leads to what looks to be one of 2003's more anticipated projects, the reunion of Schemel with Courtney Love.

Schemel's parents were New Yorkers who still have the accents to prove it, but they moved to Marysville, Wash. (about an hour north of Seattle), before she was born.
Schemel took up the drums when she was 11 "because it was something girls didn't do," she says, and to this day her mother still complains that Schemel doesn't project enough good cheer when she plays.
Schemel's not on a pedestal about it, but she says it feels good to be a role model in a band that connects so profoundly with its audience.

 Deneuve
Schemel has a reputation for not smiling, but she actually smiles a lot in a shy, crooked sort of way, and, despite all the fan mail sent asking her to cheer up, she insists, "I'm really not a sad person." But that wasn't always the case.
Schemel was raised in Marysville, Wash., a small town just north of Seattle filled with "farming-type people and cowboys." The middle of three children born to "telecommunications" parents, she knew as early as first grade she wasn't like her classmates.
With Schemel, who describes her drumming style as "heavy, rock, steady," Hole recorded Live Through This, a raw, brilliant record that was supposed to put the band on the map.

LIke the rest of us, Schemel is more than a tad weary of the term that attempted to describe a generation, or at the very least, a genre.
Understandably, however, Schemel says it was frustrating that the album was often overlooked in favour of headlines and often misunderstood when attention was paid to it.
Schemel (who by the way is in total agreement of Love's B rating of Live Through This in US Rolling Stone) is firm in her belief that the next Hole album is likely to be different.

Rock bands such as King Crimson, the Patti Smith Group, and The Doors have all incorporated improvisational passages into their live shows and studio recordings.
Sitting in the middle of a roomful of improvisational musicians anxious to play, drummer Patty Schemel does her job well by keeping the musicians and the song within the same structure and keeping everyone in time.
And then, halfway through the second CD, when each of the musicians have begun exploring looser and quieter ways to play, Patty does some exploring too, and the result is like releasing one of those rubberband-driven toys--the entire band shoots off into several different directions all at once, tossing of sparks like a roman-candle.
