This year marks the 60th anniversary of Paul Dirac’s paper A new basis for cosmology, outlining a new cosmological model based on the existence of a set of extraordinary "coincidences" in cosmic and atomic physics (Dirac 1938).
O By linking Dirac’s coincidences to concepts drawn from inflation theory, we are led to the possibility that the most recent vacuum phase transition, due to quark-hadron confinement, led to a remnant vacuum energy making an appreciable contribution to the total mass-energy of the current universe.

This book, intended as a sort of tribute to Paul Dirac, consists of a short memorial address by Stephen Hawking plus four papers related to Dirac and his work.
As Peter Goddard says in his introduction, "Dirac cited mathematical beauty as the ultimate criterion for selecting the way forward in theoretical physics." This method was sometimes enormously successful, as when Dirac predicted the existence of the positron simply because his mathematics required such particles to exist.
As we pointed out above, Dirac's life displays both the power and the limitations of mathematical methods in physics, and both aspects should be pondered by those of us who teach mathematics (particularly if we teach mathematics to students of physics).
