Paul Atreides is the son of Duke Leto Atreides I and Jessica Atreides, the heir of House Atreides, a nuclear-armed aristocratic family that rules the planet of Caladan.
Paul is beleaguered by a need he sees - to set humanity on a course that doesn't lead to stagnation and destruction, while at the same time managing both the Empire and the religion built around him.
It has yet to be seen whether such a Paul ghola will appear in the coming sequels to Chapterhouse, Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune, both written by Brian Herbert, the son of Dune's creator, in collaboration with Kevin J. Anderson, as plot details on these sequels is being kept under a tight lid.

Yet the thousands of descendants of Duncan Idaho and Siona Atreides can now, after the recovery from the deleterious effects of the Starvation and the Scattering, learn something of their ancestors and the conditions that produced the God Emperor.
Thus some of the entries in The Dune Encyclopedia were written by people who actually lived at the time of Muad'Dib; others were prepared by contemporary scholars based upon older materials, and still other entries represent preliminary papers prepared by the many investigators at Dar-es-Balat.
Selection of the final material was most arduous, but the entire governing aim is to present as well-rounded a picture of the early days of the Atreides Imperium as possible.

At center stage is Vorian Atreides, the supreme military leader of the human League which is fighting a war to the death against the Synchronized Worlds, an empire run by the AI named Omnius, from its base of Corrin.
In his 80s, yet still youthful thanks to the longevity treatments conferred on him by his detested father, the cymek Agamemnon, Vorian is aching to break the stalemate between the two forces.
Unlike the previous prequel trilogy, which was set a generation or two back from the time of Paul Atreides, this series does not labor so much under the aura of the originals.
