Busy screenwriter Paul Attanasio began his career as film critic for The Washington Post (1984-87) and as host of "The Movie Show" (Cinemax, 1986-87), a cable series devoted to movie reviews, interviews and behind-the-scenes-reports on the contemporary film scene.
He got his first scriptwriting break creating the pilot for the NBC series "Homicide: Life on the Street", a gritty look at the Baltimore police, produced by Barry Levinson.
Attanasio then reteamed with producer Levinson, writing the screenplay for Mike Newell's crime drama "Donnie Brasco" (1997), featuring Al Pacino and Johnny Depp, before undertaking a second adaptation (sharing credit with Steve Hauser) of a Crichton novel, "Sphere" (1998), directed by Levinson and starring Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L Jackson and Sharon Stone.

"The Mosquito Coast" is drawn from Paul Theroux's novel, an equally ambitious literary effort that sits squarely within the American tradition -- a story of dreams corrupted and power misused, of invention, paranoia and the lust for a frontier.
Screen writer Paul Schrader includes a voice-over narration spoken by Allie's eldest son Charlie (River Phoenix), and the suspicion is that Schrader saw that relationship as central, while director Peter Weir, swept up in the movie's themes and captivated by Ford (whom he worked with on "Witness"), forgot what his story was about.
At any rate, the relationship isn't developed dramatically, so the narration contributes nothing besides a lazy way to connect the dots.

There are small details throughout that are quietly effective, such as a scene, beautifully underplayed, in which Madsen tries to hold a meeting in one room while Pacino hammers endlessly at a stolen parking meter in another.

: Quiz Show - DVD film   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
This vigorously entertaining film, sharply directed by Robert Redford from Paul Attanasio's brilliant screenplay, is based on the game-show scandals of the 1950s, when TV quiz shows were rigged to attract higher ratings and lucrative sponsorships.
When a congressional investigator (Rob Morrow) catches on to the scam and Stempel blows the whistle on this backstage manipulation, Quiz Show becomes a smart, political exposé about the first generation of television, the corrupting effect of celebrity and success, and the ongoing loss of innocence in American society.
Bristling with superior dialogue and energized by an excellent cast including Paul Scofield as Van Doren's morally upstanding father, Quiz Show succeeds as history lesson, intelligent thriller, and morality tale, setting the stage for the countless scandals that would follow in a nation addicted to television.
