Paul Barbarin's year of birth is often given as 1901, but his brother Louis Barbarin (born 1902) said he was quite sure that Paul was several years older than him, and Paul Barbarin simply refused to answer the year of his birth in an interview at Tulane University's Jazz Archives.
Barbarin was an accomplished and knowledgeable musician, a member of ASCAP, and the composer of a number of pop tunes and Dixieland standards, including Come Back Sweet Papa, Don't Forget To Mess Around (When You're Doing The Charleston), Bourbon Street Parade, and (Paul Barbarin's) Second Line.
Paul Barbarin died on February 17, 1966 while playing a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade.

Isidore Barbarin earned his reputation on the mellophone, an alto horn, in the Onward, the most fabled brass band in New Orleans from 1900 until the end of World War I. The Onward's winter uniforms were blue with a fl side stripe.
Paul Barbarin, the son who became the most influential of the family's second generation jazzmen, recalled in an oral-history interview: "Back in those days all the undertakes hired out the carriages for all kinds of affairs.
Barbarin died in 1969 at the age of 88 and had quite a brass-band funeral himself.

Part of a large musical family, Paul's father Isadore played brass instruments; three of his brothers were musicians (including Louis, who was also a fine drummer), and his nephew was banjoist Danny Barker.
Through the years, Paul Barbarin recorded with King Oliver, Luis Russell, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, in addition to leading many sessions of his own (starting in 1950) for 504, Circle, GHB, Jazztone, Atlantic, Good Time Jazz, Southland and Nobility.

Paul actually died while leading the band at a carnival parade in 1969.

With his father, Isadore, an established brass player and a member of the Onward Brass Band, and his brothers, Louis Barbarin (drums), Lucien (drums) and William (cornet) all playing jazz, Paul Barbarin could hardly have done anything but become a jazz musician.
From 1928 Barbarin worked mainly in New York with the Luis Russell band, which in 1935 came under the nominal leadership of Louis Armstrong.
Barbarin played with the simplistic drive of the earliest New Orleans drummers; though he lacked the polish of Baby Dodds and the flair of Zutty Singleton, he always swung any band in which he played.

The Barbarins are a dynasty of New Orleans jazz.
This month the Friends of New Orleans Cemetaries commemorated the life of the patriarch, Isidore Barbarin with a tribute at St. Augustine church followed by a brass-band march to St. Louis cemetery No 1 where a plaque at Barbarin's tomb was unveiled.
His son, Charles R. Barbarin was a trumpeter.
