Breitner Bashes Ribbeck   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Former world-champion soccer player Paul Breitner has bashed the German national soccer team for its dismal performance in Wednesday's 1:1 match against Switzerland, calling for head coach Erich Ribbeck's removal after the European Chamipnships in July (10th June - 12th July).
Follwoing the shocking 0:3 defeat against the generally mediocre US team last year, the players have barely managed to redeem themselves, least of all in the 1:2 defeat against the Netherlands, a match in which the inadequacy of the German players was impossible to ignore.
Although Breitner, who writes sports columns for some nationwide yellow-press publications, is known as a particularly grumpy fellow, there are few who dispute his evaluation of the state of German soccer playing.

Breitner was a vital cog in the German machine that triumphed in the 1972 European Nations Cup.
Often criticised for being provocative, Breitner did not go out of his way to calm troubled waters and it was no surprise that he chose to move to Spain and Real Madrid for a change of air.
Breitner soon became the power behind the throne at the club, thriving without the shadow of Beckenbauer over him, and Bayern continued to dominate the German league, winning it in 1980 and 1981.
