Paul Desmond - Pandora Internet Radio
Paul Desmond is widely recognized for his genius as a melodic improviser and as the benchmark of cool jazz sax players.
Desmond is best known for his years with the Dave Brubeck Quartet (1959-1967) and his infamous composition "Take Five." He met Brubeck in the late '40s and played with his Octet.
Desmond played his loping, slow, ordered, and intricate solos in direct contrast to the pianist's obsession with large chords, creating a myriad of textures for melodic and rhythmic counterpoint unlike any heard in jazz.

 Paul Desmond - Verve Records
In an era that worshipped the frenetic, bebop style of Charlie Parker, Paul Desmond found his own sound, a tone that he claimed imitated a "dry martini." It was a sound that made him a favourite with critics and fans alike, and won him jazz poll after jazz poll.
Desmond's melodic solos were in marked contrast to the polytonal rhythms of Brubeck, but somehow they clicked and drove each other to greatness.
Desmond's pure tone, the ingenuity of his melodic lines, his harmonic resourcefulness, the musical wit that reflected his literate and sophisticated personality, made him one of the most personal and appealing of all jazz stylists.

Paul Desmond (November 5, 1924 - May 30, 1977) came toprominence as the saxophone player of the Dave Brubeck quartet (he evenpenned their biggest hit, Take Five) from 1951 (when the quartet was formed) until 1967.
He lovedgentle ballads and could float off into dreamy or syrupy solos (depending on point of view) unless woken up by his bandmates.Much of the success of the classic Dave Brubeck quartet was due to the superposition of his light, airy style and Brubeck'srelatively heavy polytonal piano work.
Desmond also had collaborations with Gerry Mulligan, Jim Hall and others over the years; after the break-up of theBrubeck quartet in 1967, he retired for a while, then began to resurface in occasionalreunions with Brubeck, Mulligan, Hall, a Christmas concert with the Modern Jazz Quartet in 1971, and collaborations with Ed Bickertand others.

Desmond's reluctance to again get involved in the wearing business of playing publicly was in reaction to the logistics of his career with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, a seventeen-year round airplanes, hotels, clubs, concerts, receptions, unpredictable meals, and, to put it mildly, irregular hours.
Desmond's curiosity is endless, his conversations stimulating, his ability to see through to the center of an issue - or a person - as amazing as his tolerance.
Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan are not only old friends who came up at about the same time on the big-time jazz scene, but their strong feelings about the role of ensemble playing in jazz makes them ideal partners for a get-together such as this.

Paul Desmond studied clarinet at San Francisco State University and played in various local groups before joining the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951.
Desmond was one of the most capable representatives of the "cool" tendency in alto saxophone jazz, of which Lee Konitz was the chief exponent, and which Lester Young, Benny Carter, and others had foreshadowed in the late 1930s.
Desmond's independent recordings, with the sidemen Gerry Mulligan (1962) and Hall (1959-65), for example, do him more justice than his numerous ones with Brubeck, for whom he composed the popular Take Five in 5/4 time.
