Paul Gouin (May 20, 1898 - December 4, 1976) was a politican in Quebec, Canada.
was the son of Lomer Gouin and the grandson of Honoré Mercier.
Gouin withdrew his support from Duplessis on June 18, 1936, but most members of the ALN caucus sided with Duplessis and joined with his Conservative caucus to formally merge into the Union Nationale party, which not long afterwards won the 1936 election.

Gouin, Paul, lawyer, politician (b at Montréal 20 May 1898; d there 4 Dec 1976), son of Jean-Lomer GOUIN and grandson of Honoré MERCIER, both former prime ministers of Québec.
In 1934 Gouin established the ACTION LIBÉRALE NATIONALE which attracted reform-minded Liberals and nationalists opposed to the policies of the TASCHEREAU administration.
Prior to the 1935 elections, Gouin formed an alliance with Conservative Party leader Maurice DUPLESSIS; he soon became disenchanted with Duplessis, however, and left the coalition before the 1936 elections which Duplessis's UNION NATIONALE won handily.

Reliance is mainly on two letters written by Gouin to Continental - one in 1966 referring to damage sustained in 1964 which he said he found to be permanent and the other in 1968 advising that he had acquired proof to support his earlier finding of permanent damage to plaintiffs' wells.
Gouin consequently tailed off his letter with this advice: "We are now ready for the Continental Oil Company to make arrangements to pay for the damage.

The Union Nationale was originally a coalition of the Conservative Party and the ACTION LIBÉRALE NATIONALE, formed to contest the 1935 provincial election in Québec.
The coalition's leaders were Maurice DUPLESSIS of the Conservative Party and Paul Gouin of the ALN.
The Union Nationale was completely dominated by Duplessis until his death in September 1959; it was then led by Paul SAUVÉ until his death less than 4 months later.

He also dispensed with Gouin and outmaneuvred his other Action libérale nationale allies, defeated the hapless Joseph-Adélard GODBOUT, and won a landslide victory in August 1936, ending 39 years of Liberal rule.
His system depended upon employing the clergy at bargain wages to do what was really secular work in schools and hospitals, while reducing the episcopate to financial dependence; reducing taxes, balancing budgets and persuading the conservatives and nationalists to vote together (for "autonomy" as he called it).
His system crumbled after his death with the demise of his successors Paul SAUVÉ and Daniel JOHNSON and the triumph of the QUIET REVOLUTION.

Founded in 1934 by discontented Liberals under Paul GOUIN, this third party in Québec politics quickly gained the support of radical FRENCH CANADIAN NATIONALISTS such as Philippe Hamel and Ernest Grégoire.
After the UN's striking victory in the 1936 election, most of the well-known nationalists formerly linked to the ALN broke with Duplessis, whom they accused of refusing to implement the party's program.
Paul Gouin, who had not even been a candidate in 1936, unsuccessfully attempted to revive the ALN in the 1939 election, but he was not successful.
