He began it in 1948 and it was highly anticipated, but Grimault’s partner André Sarrut showed the film unfinished in 1950, against Grimault’s wishes.
In 1967, Grimault got possession of the film and was able to complete it under a new title, The King and the Bird, which ultimately became The Curious Adventures of Mr.

The film was made with Grimault’s participation, introducing each of the films to the accordian clown from Le Roi et L’Oiseau (in live sequences filmed by Jacques Demy).
Paul Grimault is interviewed and talks about the foundation of Les Gemeaux Studios, working in German-occupied France, taking us through his career up to the enormity of making a full length feature with only a small team of animators.

Conceived in the late '40s by animator Paul Grimault and famed screenwriter Jacques Prévert, this was intended to be France's first full-length animated feature, but, due to budgetary problems, it was left incomplete until 1980.
Grimault forsakes realism in favor of bold colors, disorienting shifts in scale and perspective, and a number of odd transformations (my favorite is when the King's throne becomes a carnival-style bumper car).
But like Miyazaki, Grimault offers more than escapist fantasy: In the final scene, the giant robot tenderly frees a tiny bird, then triumphantly smashes the wooden cage that once held it.
