Paul Grist’s worlds of Kane and Jack Staff are painted in stark fls and whites, figures reduced to icons, environments represented by no more than a smattering of rocks, or bricks, or a few wisps of clouds.
Grist, who had been writing and drawing comics for a few years by this point, pitched Marvel Comics on a Union Jack miniseries, which would spin out of this old Captain America story, keying off of the possible endings he’d imagined years before.
Recently, many of the characters Paul Grist references and resuscitates in Jack Staff have appeared in DC Comics’s Albion, plotted by Alan Moore and written by Leah Moore and John Reppion.

 SAVANT:: Reviews
Paul Grist's Jack Staff is ostensibly about "Britain's Greatest Hero!", a mysterious figure in a stylized Union Jack spandex outfit brandishing a staff.
Grist begins with the detectives and a grisly setup, but before you've had time to settle in for the tale, up pops The Druid and, reaching outside the fourth wall of the page, directly addresses the reader, imploring his help for the good of the cosmos.
Grist's layouts would probably work just as well silently as they do with the addition of text; they demonstrate that despite what we've been fed over the years, we readers don't need to be led by the nose.

When Paul Grist announced that his self-published series Jack Staff was moving to Image Comics and in color, I was nothing short of delighted.
In both Kane and now Jack Staff, Grist has juggled a story narrative spanning two different time zones; in the case of Jack Staff, Grist is splitting it between Jack Staff's earlier time in the limelight (twenty years earlier, before his sudden mysterious disappearance) and the present.
Grist's people have always looked so very real despite its whimsical style; he's able to bring such emotion to his characters it's fantastic.

 Welcome to Slushfactory.com: A Pop Culture Extravaganza
As new readers, we’re naturally expecting to have missed out on some things, but at the same time, there’s a reasonable expectation that a first issue (even the first issue of a second volume) will summarize enough past material so as to be coherent, which this issue sort of fails to do.
Grist basically gives each character or group of characters about two pages each for a short bio and narrative that establishes who they are and roughly how they fit into the context of the overarching story.
I simply feel that Grist had a rather sizeable opportunity, debuting at a much more well-known publisher, to capitalize on good word of mouth and gain some new readers.

Grist's approaches to Captain America (Sgt. States) and Dr. Strange (The Druid) are alternately hilarious and eerie, taking approaches that are very original, yet could never work in Marvel's continuity.

The resolution of the Kapitan Krieg plot works quite well, and Grist displays his usual strong writing skills with a chapter that both brings the plot to a satisfying climax and leaves behind a number of compelling questions.
His simple cartoony style seems to belie an intimate understanding of the medium; layouts and pacing, storytelling and characterisation are all absolutely spot on, making for a comic that while lacking in flashy overdone visuals, is nonetheless a joy to look at.
