SS-Gruppenführer Paul Hausser, the brilliant ex-commander of 2.SS-Panzergrenadier-Division Das Reich, was placed in charge of the corps, and was tasked with defending the strategic city of Kharkov.
After defending the city for as long as possible, Hausser disobeyed Hitler's orders and told his troops to abandon the city to avoid encirclement.
In the remaining weeks of February, the corps was almost entirely responsible for the destruction of Mobile Group Popov, the major Soviet attacking force.

Hausser later claimed that this was kept secret from his men, suggesting that Himmler’s deception that they were serving in a normal military force was well planned.
Paul Werner-Hope of the Totenkopf commanded an infantry battalion in Russia, but after being wounded in July 1942 he was transferred to the guard detachment at Auschwitz.
Hausser and Steiner may have seen a distinction between their military role and the racial-political tasks of the rest of the SS, but there was no such distinction in the minds of the SS leadership.

The Allied buildup in the Normandy beachhead was delayed by a storm which lasted from June 17 to June 23.
The Germans were able to take advantage of the weather which grounded Allied aircraft, to move II SS Panzer Corps (under SS General Paul Hausser) to reinforce their troops in Normandy, intending to launch a major counter-offensive with them.
The German command was in some disarray, as General Friedrich Dollman, commanding the German Seventh Army died of a heart attack immediately after ordering Hausser to mount the counter-attack and Field Marshals Erwin Rommel and Gerd von Rundstedt were en route to a conference with Adolf Hitler and out of touch with their headquarters.

Hausser had lost an eye and a chunk of his jaw during the fighting in the USSR in 1941, giving him something of the appearance of an old chewed-up alley cat.
Hausser, now able to fight a battle of maneuver, turned on the Soviet Sixth Army, and with the help of the 48th Panzer Corps gave the overextended Soviets a brutal beating, inflicting tens of thousands of casualties and destroying hundreds of Red tanks for minimal losses of his own.

On August 5 and 6, 1946, SS-Obergruppenfuehrer Paul Hausser testified on behalf of the Waffen-SS at the International Military Tribunal (IMT) proceedings in Nuernberg.
Paul "Papa" Hausser, a German Army general who had transferred to the SS, was generally considered to have been the father of the Waffen-SS.
Hausser's testimony is interesting for the information he gives on the history of the Waffen-SS, and also for the detailed listing of criminal acts by Waffen-SS units which can be found in Hausser's cross-examination.

Fortunately for the Ostheer, Hausser was determined to save his corps from such pointless destruction, even if this meant disobeying his Führer.
Yet on 11 March, Hausser’s spearheads disobediently fought their way into the centre of Kharkov in costly street fighting with the aim of securing such a coup before the rest of his command had completed their encirclement.
Hausser’s SS fanatics, however, promptly tarnished this fine military achievement by committing many atrocities against helpless civilians and disarmed prisoners.

 Second World War Books: Review
One of the more important and more thoroughly considered controversies at the upper levels of command is the decision by SS Obergruppenfuehrer Paul Hausser to abandon Kharkov in direct contradiction of orders issued by Hitler.
Lanz was providing a documented record of his own actions while Hausser chose to suffer the consequences of acting contrary to a direct order from Hitler, regardless of how militarily correct that act might have been.
If that were so, it can be speculated that during Lanz's visit to Hausser the generals worked out their strategy to save the army but of course no documentation exists to even suggest that this was so.
