Paul Henreid Biography :: Hollywood.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Henreid is best remembered as Ingrid Bergman's husband, the stoic Resistance leader Victor Laszlo, in "Casablanca" (1943) and for his classic bit of romantic business in "Now Voyager" (1942) in which he lit two cigarettes at the same time and handed one to Bette Davis.
Henreid became a leading man with Reinhardt's theater company and appeared in two Austrian films in the early 1930s before he moved to England because of his anti-Nazi sentiments.
In 1964, Henreid reteamed with his "Now, Voyager" and "Deception" (1946) co-star Bette Davis, directing her in the dual roles of homicidal twin sisters in the campy suspense melodrama "Dead Ringers".

As a result of his multifaceted career, Henreid was one of very few Hollywood professionals to have been awarded not one but two stars on the Walk of Fame.

Paul Georg Julius Hernreid Ritter Von Wassel-Waldingau (wow, that's a mouthful!) was born on January 10th, 1908 in Trieste, Austria-Hungary.
Paul played Victor Laszlo in the crictically acclaimed movie, "Casablanca", which also starred Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet.
Although Henreid never really recaptured the magic he had in "Casablanca" and "Now, Voyager", he distinguished himself as a great actor, and a wonderful producer and director.

Paul Henreid - Films as Actor:, Films as Director:
But Henreid, as Jerry Durrance, the unattainable love of Charlotte's life, created an indelible image when, in a recurring motif, he lit two cigarettes simultaneously and then handed one to Davis, one of the great romantic gestures in silver screen history.
While Henreid's characters never flirted or gave a heavy come-on toward female co-stars, the actor exuded an air of romance which most women—on-screen and in the audience—could not resist.
Henreid's career dates to 1933, when he was discovered in Vienna by Otto Preminger.
