Paul Hermann Müller Biography | World of Anatomy and Physiology
Paul Müller was an industrial chemist who discovered that dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) could be used as an insecticide.
For his work with DDT and the role his discovery played in the fight against diseases such as typhus and malaria, Müller was awarded the 1948 Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology.
Paul Hermann Müller was born in Olten, Switzerland on January 12, 1899, to Gottlieb and Fanny Leypoldt Müller.

 Muller and Mutations
Muller believed that that the rare but non-zero occurrence of advantageous mutations was a necessary consequence of the effects of Darwinian selection.
Muller was more than an outstanding scientist; he was an outspoken and controversial one as well.
A special irony with the use of Muller to mount a criticism of evolutionary theory is that Muller himself considered evolution to be a fact.

Although DDT was first synthesized in 1874 by a Viennese pharmacist, Othmar Zeidler, he did not investigate the properties of the new substance but simply published his synthesis.
Field trials of the compound resynthesised by Muller showed it to be effective against a wide variety of pests including the common housefly, the louse, Colorado beetle, and mosquito.
Paul Muller was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1948 "for his discovery of the high efficiency of DDT as a contact poison against several arthropods".

Paul Hermann Müller was born at Olten, Solothurn, Switzerland, on January 12th, 1899, and his early childhood was spent at Lenzburg, Aargau, the birthplace of his father who was an employee of the Swiss Federal Railway.
The family moved to Basle where Paul attended primary school and, later, Free Evangelical elementary and secondary schools.
He commenced work in 1916 as a laboratory assistant at Dreyfus and Company and the following year he joined Lonza A.G. as an assistant chemist in the Scientific-Industrial Laboratory of their electrical plant, gaining a wealth of practical knowledge which later stood him in good stead in his career as an industrial chemist.

He also required that it have a high degree of chemical stability, so that its effect would persist for long periods of time and its manufacture would be economical.
In January 1944 DDT was used to quash an outbreak of typhus carried by lice in Naples, the first time a winter typhus epidemic had been stopped.
Although Muller had required his ideal insecticide to be relatively nontoxic to warm-blooded animals, the widespread use and persistence of DDT (in 1968 it was estimated that 1,000,000,000 pounds [453,000,000 kg] of the substance remained in the environment) made it a hazard to animal life, and it showed signs of disrupting ecological food chains.

The Environmental Literacy Council - DDT
In 1939 Swiss scientist Paul Hermann Muller discovered that DDT was an effective pesticide.
DDT was regarded as an ideal pesticide because it was toxic to a wide range of insects but it was relatively harmless to mammals, fish, and plants, particularly in comparison to other pesticides commonly used at the time, such as lead arsenate.
For his discovery, Paul Muller was awarded the Nobel prize for medicine in 1948.

Swiss chemist Paul Hermann Muller was set to work to find a chemical pesticide that would show rapid results but pose little or no harm to warm blooded mammals and plant life.
Muller’s observations showed DDT to be relatively harmless to warm-blooded animals (“Muller” 1).
Muller thought he had created a miracle pesticide when in fact he had only contributed to an environmental disaster.
